Poll question: Do you like white noise?
That stuff is lovely to listen to. A nice continual soothing fuzzy noise.

2. LOL!
:D

(of course, 'white noise' is a technical term used by audiophiles... not meant to be racially biased! :-) )

7. No problem!
I forgot to add in the previous post, 'White noise' is a continual sound. Static interference like that you'd pick up from a radio frequency that isn't used is an example.

Or an old hankscraft brand humidifier; run those and the sound it makes is rather like white noise.

Some of the sound effects used on "Doctor Who" during the 1960s were controlled and augmented forms of white noise (mixed with oscillating beeps and tones of course)

6. I prefer pink noise
I don't know what the technical differences are, but white noise hisses too much. Pink noise is much more relaxing.

9. No, I can't stand it, and it keeps me up
I start trying to hear a pattern in it. It drives me up the wall.

To fall asleep, I listen to mello techno music on low. Where you barely hear the thumping bass line. I sleep so soundly with that on in the background.

10. We have it at work - once it went off it was unbearable
I work in a large office with many cubes. It drowns out all the chitter chatter and BS; without it you can hear all the nonsense and they can hear you. Pretty much a requirement in that kind of environment.

I purposely listen to just radio static some early and dark mornings driving in to work. It's quite relaxing and you get into a little trance from it.

11. Great to sleep to.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 09:46 PM by pmbryant
In fact, it has almost become a necessity for me for sleeping, though not quite.

EDIT: It has to be true white noise, though, like from a fan, or an approximation like from a small countertop fountain. Those machines that use recordings to try to simulate it are never good enough, and always have some kind of repeating pattern that eventually drives me batty.

12. Great book! Don Delillo is one of my favorite authors.
White Noise is where Delillo says "TV is a thief of time." Prescient White Noise, and the Airborne Toxic Event.
