A gunshot sounded among the squeals and giggles at Ruth Street Church of God's annual Easter egg hunt Saturday in Flint. All eyes turned to an 11-year-old girl who had dropped a loaded gun outside Gundry Elementary School.
It was one of two weapons found outside the school, along with a BB gun and toy gun, Flint police said.
NaShalyn Porter, one of the children taking part in the egg hunt, found one of the loaded guns in a rotting tree trunk outside the school.
It dropped out of her hands when another child bumped her as she ran to give it to an adult, said her mother, Najia Elerson-Porter, 34, of Flint. No one was injured.
"We're covered by the grace of God," said Elerson-Porter, who said the incident was a lesson for the children at the hunt. "If you ever stumble on a weapon like that, you do not pick it up."
Flint police are to begin an investigation into the incident today, said Officer James Peterson.
