"Only a war can save us now."
http://www.jihadunspun.com/OperationUSA/articles/gunsvsbutter.cfm

"A year ago, a glum Silicon Valley executive, seeing recession on the horizon, told me, "Only a war can save us now." Well, we got one and, with it, the supposedly resuscitative burst of government spending he had in mind."

" Boosting defense spending will put to work some of the people and machines that have been rendered idle by recession. But this kind of stimulus spending is like adrenaline: it works best in small, targeted doses."

This comes from...uh..how should I put it? A web site who's opinions are different than those who support the war. It's good for getting an outside perspective.

1. Yes, the article is from a very suspect publication called the New Yorker

For those who are not aware, Jihad Unspun echoes articles from a variety of other papers, and does very little, very infrequent original reporting of its own.

It is accused of being both a CIA plant and a terrorist front, depending on who is accusing.

2. National security vs. economic security.
Quoting the article:
If you're spending almost four hundred billion dollars on defense, you're choosing national security over economic security, whether you realize it or not. In his State of the Union address last week, Bush said that he would spend "whatever it costs" to defend the country. Down the line, that could cost us more than we know.

To some degree, economic security is national security. If Mauritania decides tomorrow to become belligerent and devote all available resources to the build-up of its military might, I doubt many (outside of, perhaps, the present reality challenged mis-administration) would lose much sleep over it since most of very little is still very little.

4. In my more youthful days
I would follow the news of teenagers and gangs and drugs and violence, and think that a war would at least cause them to transfer their aggressive tendencies toward someone other than their neighbors and fellow countrymen(women).

Boy, was I ignorant.
