Secretary of State Lugar?
I would doubt that it would happen if the democrats keep control of the govenor's mansion in Indiana. However, it would be a good oppurtunity to win a senate seat. It could just be an attempt to have Lugar kiss up to Bush to get the job even though he doesn't have a chance. And I would love to see Wolfowitz gone.

Lugar to State?

Well-placed sources say Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is the leading prospect to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state in the second term of a Bush administration.

Lugar, a 71-year-old, five-term senator, is close to Powell and shares his less hawkish views of the world. Powell is definitely leaving at the end of the first Bush term. His friend and colleague, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, will leave with him. The choice of Lugar would be enhanced if his former aide, Mitch Daniels, were elected governor of Indiana next year so that a Republican in Indianapolis would select Lugar's successor for the last two years of his term if he left the Senate.

A footnote: Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, once thought to be in line for the top job at either State or Defense in the second term, is reported to have lost favor at the White House.

1. If Shrub loses Powell, he's done for.
Powell owns 60% of the entire administrations shared brain.

Watch the pace of missteps quicken if Powell goes.

2. Well, Lugar is smart too
He has been quite moderate on foreign policy. He is probably even better than Powell.

3. He's as worthless as tits on a boar hog,
just like Powell.

Toe the administration line and spout its lies, but make it "seem" moderate.

6. Lugar doesn't toe administration line
He has steadily criticized the Bush administration for all his years in office.

7. But in a "nice" mild way,
while continuing to vote for every Bush plan and boondoggle.

4. Lugar
will be marginalized the inner firing squad just like Powell has been. Any positive influence he might have, like Powell's originally, will be window dressing.

I would think Richard Lugar would be beyond this but maybe he's just tired of the Senate.

5. Lugar is a good choice, but they will ignore all his good judgement
Just like they did with Powell.

However, I have a hard time believing that Lugar would have been willing to go along and present the WMD arguments to the U.N. as Powell did back in February.

And because of that independent streak and all of Lugar's criticism of the Bush policy on Iraq; I doubt they will choose him.

What I don't get is why they are floating this trial balloon. There's always an endgame in the Rove Whitehouse --so what is it this time?
