Congressman Xavier Becerra Endorses Dean
Congressman Xavier Becerra Endorses Dean

LOS ANGELES--California Congressman Xavier Becerra endorsed Howard Dean here today at the Democratic National Committee's luncheon.

"Governor Dean embodies the hope and sensibility that Americans desire in our president. He gives Democrats a reason to believe. And I firmly believe that he will be the next president of the United States," Congressman Becerra said.

"I'm proud that Congressman Becerra has become part of the greatest grassroots campaign presidential politics has ever seen. We're working to achieve the goals nationally that Xavier Becerra has been working to achieve for the people of his district: ensuring good, well-paying jobs and providing affordable health care for working families. I look forward to working with him to take our country and our White House back in 2004," Governor Dean said.

Since his election in 1992, Congressman Becerra has represented California's 31st District in Los Angeles, which includes all or parts of the neighborhoods of Atwater Village, Eagle Rock, Echo Park, Glassell Park, Highland Park, Hollywood, Jefferson Park, Koreatown, Lincoln Heights, Mid City, Montecito Heights, Monterey Hills, Mount Washington, New Chinatown, Pico Union, Silverlake, South Los Angeles, Vernon and Westlake.

He is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, where he served as chair during the 105th Congress (1997-98), and the first Latino to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee.

This is a great endorsement!

1. Funny...when I think of HD I don't think of "hope"...
I think of a centrist who has a centrist, non-moving, same-ole plan for America minus "go it alone" wars.

I don't think I'll be voting for that congressman anytime soon if I could...I won't be voting for Dean. A 3rd party candidate would give me more hope if Dean is the nominee.

6. how bout you don't be silly this time around...
and vote for a progressive liberal democrat or else I'll be forced to vote for a progressive liberal 3rd party candidate.

You're just in as much control as I am.

5. Funny how the people who know Kucinich best are endorsing Dean
These congresspeople work every day with Kucinich and the other candidates that are members of the House and Senate. Yet they endorse Dean. I guess Kucinich and comapny have not impress them very much.

9. wow...
so I'm supposed to support Dean now?

haha.

I'll never vote for a dork who supports the death penalty.

Dean is just like Gore...a centrist.

And just like Gore...Bush lite won't win.

7. He's building on the base
He said he'd do it and he is doing it.

I do notice he's building up some impressive support in Congress.

16. Okay, so what criteria is acceptable?
What 'unsafe' Democrats have made endorsements and who are they endorsing and what in the name of all that is good and decent in this country does that mean?

18. Oy... This Is Crackin Me Up !!!
To many on this board, Dean is an unelectable leftist nutcase.

To many others, Dean is either an unpalatable centrist, or worse, an unconscionable Bush-Lite type.

I leave it to others here, to figure out which candidate's supporters hold which of the above views.

All I will say here, is that Dr. Dean must REALLY be doin something right!!!

Happy, happy, joy, joy!!!

:bounce::evilgrin::bounce:

And I'm STILL ABB!!!

19. I like my Congressman too...
He's got real possibilities for higher office, too. He's smart, nice, votes his conscience, and has a heart. He's also downright pretty, and that's mighty handy in politics these days...

I don't agree with this endorsement, but I'm glad Becerra gets the attention he deserves; this is a very diverse district, and he's a good voice for us. While all the other local Congresspeople voted for the war resolution (Schiff, Berman, Harman and yes, even WAXMAN) he voted his conscience. As far as I can tell, it wasn't a cut-and-dried decision for him either, but I believe the vigorous calling by many of us constituents was a somewhat deciding factor. Now THAT'S representative government.

Keep an eye on this guy; he's got something.

29. i'm comparing possible coatails and slinker posts these announcements
so i assumed he's be the person to ask. if dean has the coatails that people claimm, i'd like to see eveidence of them. i have read references to 'at risk' candidate's complaining about the possibility of "dragging howard around" and need to hear the other side.

thank you in advance.

31. That is an arguement that you can make about any candidate
No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Kerry.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Clark.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Gephardt.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Edwards.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Lieberman.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Sharpton.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Braun.

No one with an unsafe seat has endorsed Kucinich.

There really aren't that superdelegates who are 'at risk' next year. Thanks to gerrymandering by both parties, there aren't that many competative districts. The competative districts next year will be in the the open seats where no incumbent is running for reelection.

25. Those people aren't endorsing any candidates
They are too preoccupied with their own reelections. They have not endorsed Dean, or any other candidate for that matter.

favorably to Dean that his poll numbers are being driven upward in something of a trend. :bounce:
