No bodies found after Iraq gunfight
From correspondents in Samarra
December 2, 2003

THE US military has said it believes 54 insurgents were killed in intense exchanges in the northern Iraqi town of Samarra on Sunday but commanders admitted they had no bodies.

The only corpses at the city's hospital were those of ordinary civilians, including two elderly Iranian pilgrims and a child.

US Brigadier General Mark Kimmit told a Baghdad press conference 54 militants were killed, 22 wounded and one arrested.

3. My Lai, anyone?
Blasting away at anything that moved.

No win situation for our troops. They are not wanted in Iraq by Iraqis and its becoming more universal every day.

18. Exactly, from no reports to reporting unconfirmed kills
We were killing VC at the rate of 10 to 1 according to some press accounts. The officers want body counts? Sure here is a body count, oh, not big enough? Well, I forgot to mention...

7. There has to be an investigation into this
If 54 civilians died, which may well be, then who was shooting back at the US soldiers ? CIA agents ???

4. Thats not the only thing that bothers me about this
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 10:14 PM by Egnever
I also notice that despite a suposed barage of RPG's not one american vehicle was damaged. All you see in all the news clips are burned out Iraqi cars.

I think this was a case of over reacting to a threat. Spun to apear like a heroic battle.

I may have my tinfoil hat on too tight but something in this story stinks.

5. none of this story makes sense to me--it never sounded real
This amazing "battle" sounds a lot like Saving Private Lynch. I can't picture it at all. I don't think it happened in any way like it was described.

Sure got some big headlines, though.

I hate these fucking criminals.

Thank you, George Orwell, for preparing our minds for the reality we now face.

bring our troops home now.

8. Got this from another board: pretty powerful
Compare and contrast:

Al-jazeera: Innocents killed in Samarra bloodbath

BBC: Many dead in Iraqi city firefight

NY Times: 46 Iraqis Die in Fierce Fight Between Rebels and G.I.'s

CNN: Ambushers killed in battles with U.S. forces

Fox news: U.S. Forces Kill 46 Iraqis Attempting Ambush

10. Aren't you paying attention?! Our Army uses Phasers...
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 10:21 PM by Patriot_Spear
...they make the body disappear.

The Army R&D people will be sending genetically engineered 'Aliens' to fight next week. After that, they've created a race of Robot 'Terminators'. The week after that we finish them off with Bruce Willis... we'll let him sing.

We're winning in Iraq- or don't you believe President Bush*?!

*The legitmacy of the Bush Presidency is in dispute.

12. Would local Iraqis have had a chance to take the bodies away?
Just wondering. It is a very strange situation. Playing devil's advocate, though, I wonder: if the ambushers were wearing Fedayeen clothing, would the locals have dragged them away to hide their identity?

And yet, how did we ever get a body count? Who did the counting? As for me, I hope the casualties were low, because I am very concerned about revenge even if the ostensible motive for the ambush was robbery.

A friend of mine brought up the possibility that the money and attendant troops were bait to lure the Iraqis into attempting an ambush. Nice to know our boys and girls are bloody bait for guerilla sharks, isn't it?

13. What about weapons?
54 armed insurgents. We should have rounded up a pretty good slew of weapons. Either that or we let the weapons disappear with the bodies? This is pretty fishy. I'm waiting for the whole story.

15. Well that explains why I thought the reports were odd
I thought it was odd that after a huge battle we already knew the exact number of Iraqi soldiers who were dead. Reports of previous battles were never reported like this one...every station repeating the number this morning like some crazy mantra.

We should write a Lying For Dummies book...clearly this admin has no clue. They were way too specific with the details...the exact number of soldiers killed instead of an estimate, the fact that we knew they were soldiers as opposed to "terrorists", the descriptions of the uniforms, and am I going crazy or did the reports this morning also discuss some tatoo on their bodies that supposedly linked them to Saddam?? Also, you don't lie about the death of someone without any evidence of a body. Seriously, this is so basic.

Just like with the Air Force One flight and the supposed tense situation with British Airways...they concocted an entire conversation which isn't even neccessary.

Is there anything these people CAN do? It's sad when you can't tell the truth but you can't tell a freakin' lie either.
