Madonna Holds Fundraiser For Clark
by Rob
Tue Nov 18th, 2003 at 17:39:12 UTC

Madonna has become the latest celebrity to join the growing Wesley Clark campaign. MSNBC reports that she held a private fundraiser for Clark in her Los Angeles home on Sunday night. Sources told MSNBC that Madonna was very impressed with Clark's vision for America. Clark is expected to raise $12 million this quarter and is nearing 45,000 volunteers signed up on Meetup as well as additional volunteers signed up through the official campaign web site.

This must be a thing for Clark, First it was the Eagles and Don Henley, now Madonna. Next Outcast(sp)

13. The cornerstone of the Deanie mantra is bitterness......
But I suspect they're more bitter about the fact Clark, after being buried by them, managed to raise $12 million or more in this quarter than they are about the Material Girl supporting the nominee. Clark managed to bring in some pretty good scratch for a dead man.

15. Clark's Fundraising Will Be Great
I was initially freaked-out when I saw the first reports a couple of weeks ago saying $6 MM for the quarter. My unofficial tallies had chalked up over half that amount in the first couple of weeks! The recent totals being floated sound much more reasonable to me. :-)

Since name recognition is so important--and people need to get acquainted with Clark--this is great. Madonna draws attention. Anything like this that can grab attention is wonderful.

Now that our cable news channels have so much entertainment fluff---maybe stuff like this will help.

31. But is it? I think it's wonderful that someone, Madonna, is trying to help
Clark raise money. I can also picture the wingers having some fun screeching that the evil Madonna endorses and raises money for Clark. Eventually the preachers around here will be spewing it from their pulpits.

Again, I think it's great, but just wanted to mention that it will be used against Clark.

50. Stupid ...
Has been ...

Not exactly terms of endearment ....

One might call these ad hominem attacks, the abusive variety ...

One might also find it hard to believe another who stabs with one hand and waves it off with the other .....

The TRUTH shall set you free ... not your opinions ....

Madonna is FAR from "stupid", as any media professional will readily attest .... the proof is in the pudding .... she'll be eating that pudding all her life, and so will her children ....

Has been ? .... the jury s still out ..... but I dont suppose someone with an now established record of hurling insults against blameless parties simply because they dont support their opinion would be the most valid source of such a conclusion ....

The more vicious the attacks, the more easily one can reject the conclusions of the attacker ....

Ad hominem attacks reveal more about the speaker than the target ....

Clark is campaigning as a DEMOCRAT, and is at least as left as Dean on most issues, and farther left on a couple.

So what? EVERYONE has to love Dean or they ain't LEFT?

NONE of you are left in my book. I'm a Socialist. Show me a candidate as left as THAT who can beat Bush and I'll support them.

You know something? I wish Dean and his supporters the best until someone comes along and pisses on me because I'm not "one of the fold." At the moment, whether you like it or not (and a ton of people have been telling ME to wait for the Primaries for unity) there are 10 different ways to support a Democratic Candidate for president. You have no monopoly at this time.

I probably need to study Kucinich more to be sure, but I'm hard put to think of something he is farther left on than Clark, especially if the comparison is limited to matters of significant relevance to winning the presidential campaign.

And I might could think of one or two things where Clark has the left edge over Kucinich.

When he places the interests of the wealthy over the interests of your average American, he's not "left" - but he's in good company, with Bush, Dean, and Kerry.

Oh you said, "significant relevance to winning the presidential campaign", I forgot, since for many of us the troubles don't end after the next election.

Just talkin' pure leftism, I fail to see how placing "the interests of your average American" over the interests of the average Chinese, Mexican, etc. is not jingoism.

And while "pro-corporate" covers a lot, I think Clark could help a lot with the MIC feeding troughs, as he has proposed.

If Clark is going to put the interests of your average Chinese and Mexican over that of the average American, let him run for UN General Secretary, not the president of the US.

"Pure leftism"? Who me? I'm a moderate swing voter.

Clark can cut the Pentagon budget, probably easier than anyone else, but he offers no shift in power to your average Americans from the wealthy. Truly, Clark is a Democrat.

"I'm a moderate swing voter." And I'm a get-aWol-out-of-the-GD-WH voter. I'm completely open to any case for a candidate with a better shot at that than Clark. If someone convinces me the Cat-in-a-Hat has better odds, my check will be in the mail (a week from Tuesday, perhaps).

Personally, I think Clark is just fine. He's a major disappointment in that he's turning out to be one of the biggest fellators of the rich and their corporations in the race, but Kerry and Dean have a lot more experience on their knees.

Kind of shameful that the general didn't come out straight away and demand that corporations be patriotic to America. I expected more, and was led to believe more by his campaign.

But yes, Clark is better than Bush, no doubt about it.

Isn't that considered progressive taxation? Take a look at the rest of his economic/jobs plan. You can't get wealth redistribution without jobs and economic growth. He also wants to review the trade agreements like Kerry, Dean, and Edwards.

76. I have read almost everything by Clark
I know about his economic plan. Clark is just being a good neo-liberal, better than a neo-con, but not my much. So far, I see no reason to believe that Clark will do anything to help the majority of Americans get more leverage over their pay and their jobs.

Clinton helped get some economic growth and jobs, at the same time pulling our bargaining position out from under us. As soon as the bad times came, we were in a worse position than before.

Clark will be different how? What will Clark do to stem the tide of outsourcing and offshoring and abusive visas?

Bilateral trade agreements is the only realistic solution. Obviously, we don't want to stop trading, we don't want to slap high tariffs on our allies, and we want to import and export goods and services.

Bilateral agreements will allow us to do all of that, and give us some leverage in pay negotiations.

I always hated that song. It is true I hate. I am filled with hate for that song. So, since I called y'all on the "bitter" buzzword, you resorted to the "hate " one. Another wingnut charge against all us angry leftists, bitter and with hatred towards bunnypants...Gotcha.

A Democratic pary member hey? You mean like Sir Clark is a Democrat of late?

59. "Take Back our Country"?
Is he secretly endorsing Dean? :)

Seriously, if he's not fundraising for John Edwards, is Edwards going to stop playing "Small Town" on his campaign stops?

35. I'm happy for Clark
and good for Madonna, too! Aside from Dean, I'd prefer to see Clark get the money than some of the other candidates

67. It's very weird reading through this thread, the Madonna bashing
Damn that Madonna for helping a Democratic Candidate, but not my Democratic Candidate!

Sounds a lot like petty whining, shouldn't you be happy she's trying to help the candidate she likes the most?

75. Indeed
Why would anyone bash someone for supporting a Dem candidate? Oh wait, that's right, it's not their candidate. :eyes:

81. This leaves me speechless.
I never had a clue Madonna was interested in politics, and the last candidate I would have guessed she'd pick for her, um, maiden voyage into fundraising would be Wesley Clark.

Then again, this is the new Madonna, she of the marriage, two kids, and children's books. Okay, there was the Britney snog. Just don't let Gert Clark catch her approaching anyone in the family that way...

85. There was a report about this on CNN and Clark said
that he and Madonna did NOT discuss any fund raisers...she never had one for him, but he would welcome her to have one. They had a "meeting" for 45 minutes. No fundraiser. :( Sorry.

87. I'm sure she will
have a fundraiser for him. They just haven't discussed it yet. If she's a supporter, it's in the bag. Lots of $$$$$ coming his way.

I love him too! In a female way. :loveya: He's too handsome for words. :7

88. CNN's Inside Politics had a different take.
Here's my transcript thread of today's report:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

According to the report, no discussion of Madonna holding a Clark fundraiser took place, although the candidate certainly wouldn't discourage it. :D
