Leading Democrats Go AWOL on Overtime Vote

Seven House dems, including Gephardt, missed the vote on guaranteed overtime pay. The measure, which passed 213-210, would deny overtime pay to between 1 million and 8 million American workers. Kucinich was present for the vote and voted against it.

". . . Under the new rules, backed by the Bush administration and campaigned for heavily by business lobbyists, those employees would still have to put in extra hours. They just wouldn't get any extra pay. Instead, some would qualify for comp time—try paying the rent with that—and others would simply be reclassified as executives, even if they wield little managerial authority."

The article states that the bill is likely to pass the Senate and that none of the Democratic candidates except Kucinich and Dean returned phone calls. The author isn't particularly happy with them, either, since they haven't made this a major issue and only Kucinich promises to reverse this bill when elected. The White House, on the other hand, worked overtime to do away with overtime pay.

". . . The president took a high-profile stand before the House vote, threatening to veto the education, health, and human-services spending bill if an amendment blocking his new overtime rules wasn't lifted. For a president who has presided over the largest net job loss since Herbert Hoover to show such determination to cut workers' overtime pay is, in the words of UFCW chief lobbyist Michael Wilson, "handing the Democrats an issue."

"If only. The day after the defeated amendment in the House, Wilson did show some fire in his belly toward the Democrats, and Gephardt in particular. Wilson said he now wants all the candidates to state publicly that on the day they're elected president, they will immediately announce the reversal of the Bush policy. So far, only Kucinich has said unequivocally that he will."

What is with the Democrats? Do they think Americans want overtime pay eliminated? This will be disastrous for the many who depend on working regular overtime hours. Receiving comp time is not the same as getting money to pay your bills! I expect that people deprived of overtime pay will lose not only the luxuries like fishing boats, family vacations, and college educations for their kids, but also the necessities like cars, homes, medical expenses. Some will be forced into bankruptcy, if they are even able to file under new laws designed to protect creditors. Of course the Bushies already took care of their friends there by requiring that credit card companies must be paid before any other obligation a bankrupt person has.

It seems unfair to me that the government will allow corporations, which should have substantial business acumen, to go bankrupt but will deny the "privilege" to individual citizens, especially in an economic climate that encourages people to overextend themselves financially.

4. Dickheads....
Why should they care when they get paid big bucks to argue?

It's not like they have to make ends meet.

5. Somehow, I think this story is bigger than what Clinton said, in that

Dems in office now are supposed to be looking after us, representing us.

I've never depended on overtime pay myself but I know that a lot of Americans do.

Why is this a non-issue at DU?

8. I think its time
Congress has been considering some very important working families votes of late! I think it's time the Democratic Party stop taking labor for granted.

As Jimmy Hoffa says, "we'll see who are real friends in the house are today, when the chamber votes on the Singapore and Chile trade agreements."

"Good paying American jobs now available everywhere except home."

Everyone write your Congressional member and try to get him or her to vote against these argeements. The hour is near.

9. As Jimmy Hoffa says: Hail to the glorious leader! heil bush!
Don't bring us Jimmy Hoffa - if you are with him, you are not with us. I say, shame on Gephardt and the rest - and I also say: kudos to Pelosi and the 210! In cse you were away, Dems are in the minority in Congress, and your friend Jimmy is directly responsible (along with other dark forces at work).

what Hoffa thinks?

12. Hoffa
Not a big fan of Jimmy's either, but I think his assault on these two trade agreements being debate today is right-on. Just becuase you agree with someone on 1 issue doesn't mean he/she is your friend at all times. I understand that

Maybe I should have quoted Leo Gerard--Steelworkers, he has complained about this bill also, instead of Jimmy Hoffa. I'll use better judgement next time

Nancy is doing a bang-up job. I realize these two agreements will pass, and I don't blame her.

"American workers---a dying breed. Us trade deficit on the rise"

BC

PS: Dennis is on the floor right now attacking this bill. He is so right on this issue.

10. Great on Pelosi, but
if only 4 of those 7 reps would have shown up and voted no, it would have defeated the bill.

That is the point.

13. Until the voting population understands
that its not about left or right, liberal or conservative but that America's politicians from both party's are letting America down the problems we face as a nation will never get fixed. You can flame me if you want but this is a failure of Nancy Peloci to threaten the likes of that asshole Gephardt and the others to do their job. She should have threatened the ones who didn't show up for the vote with national rebuke if they didn't do their job. My guess is they would have voted with the Republicans so it wouldn't have mattered.

14. 213-210 THIS is an outrage
WHEN will they stop betraying us? Since Nov. 2000 (and actually before, but certainly accelerating at that point), it's been one betrayal after another.

And Gephardt is running for PRESIDENT? Of what? For whom? The People? What a fucking joke.

15. outrage is a good word
I can't defend the Congressman missing this vote. But I can defend his actions leading the fight against NAFTA, fast-track, China PNTR, foreign steel dumping and for helping implement great labor and environmental standards into the Jordan agreement. He's really led the way. For that reason I have no problem supporting him.

I also know he better vote today against these two trade agreements.

I'm not a protectionist, but these two agreements are simply bad. Plus, they'll pave the way for CAFTA and FTAA

16. Hasn't Bush said something like
if you're willing to work hard, you'll get ahead?

Who knew all that work had to be done on straight time?
