How to do it, and why it matters

HOW TO: Freewayblogs are cardboard painted white and lettered via overhead projector. Corners and anchor points are reinforced with duct tape (at least two layers) and pierced with coat hanger or bailing wire. Wire can be quickly wrapped around fencing and secured with duct tape.

SAFETY FIRST!: Like anything else, free speech is fun until someone gets hurt. Overpass blogs should be hung on the inside of the fencing, not suspended directly over traffic (it actually looks better this way anyway.) You don't want to cause a fatal accident because your "Thou Shalt Not Kill" blog fell onto the freeway.

PLACEMENT STRATEGIES: Easy to see and hard to reach seem to be the watchwords of the freewayblogger. Blogs should be placed to be seen primarily by opposing lanes of traffic, or from otherwise difficult places to get to. Overpass blogs, though the most visible, tend to come down quickly.

IS IT LEGAL?: Yes. And No. Political speech is protected and may be posted on any state or public property (with no doubt some exceptions). In California it is illegal to post signs within 600 feet of a freeway, although that didn't seem to matter for the flags, yellow ribbons and "Support the Troops" signs. I believe the 600 foot rule is attributed to "driver distraction" (don't want to distract them from their cell phones and DVD players now, do we?) and seems perfectly reasonable... just as soon as they move all billboards & advertising 600 feet away as well. The matter is currently under review in the California courts, but for now, you can consider freewayblogging as non-violent civil disobedience.
We suggest you don't get caught.

WHY IT MATTERS: On any given day the average American is subjected to about 4,000 images and messages. Of these about 3,990 are generated by corporations. Not coincidentally, about 95% of them are lies. Like weblogs, freewayblogs are one of the last outlets for individuals to express themselves to the masses. In other words, people need to know what you have to say even more than you need to tell them. Go wild. When the intellectuals and politicians fail, it's time for the artists to step in.
