Poll question: Poll: probability of a rogue president attempting firearms confiscation
MODS: Please leave this in the GD forum for maximum participation

Many US citizens oppose laws that require each firearm to be registered by serial number. They believe if firearms were registered, a future rogue president might use that data to attempt to confiscate all firearms.

Please provide below, your subjective estimate of the probability "P" of whether a future president might attempt to use a firearms registration database if one existed to confiscate firearms.

Note the question is whether a future president might attempt to confiscate firearms, it is not whether such an attempt would be successful.

1. 5%--highly unlikely, but I wouldn't rule anything out completely

2. i think
it's that right winged conspiracy theory where they think the government is bad and trying to take away rights. they care more about their guns than their free speach rights

3. we might as well face it
At some point, it will come to a civil war. Maybe not for a long long time.

But every empire comes to an end eventually.

And gun confiscation as a federal tactic in a time of civil unrest would ABSOLUTELY happen if it were available. I have no doubt.

Federal confiscation of ANYTHING THREATENING is likely, computers, privacy, etc.

5. that's certainly the gunnie mindset, isn't it
but I think it's simply your fear talking...somehow or another, guns are more important to you than other social issues are, and that's truly sad

Here's a counter-question: if someone starts a gun registry or not, do you have a chance in hell of beating back the American military or police? Why should you? Isn't America about laws we all agree to?

6. The military would mutiny.
The chances that the military would agree to participate in such a confiscation is negligible.

11. There's no point in answering.
My response negates any reason to answer.

8. And other forms of instant political suicide
Perhaps a future president will have the Pentagon create an army of robots to steal all the old peoples' medication, too, but I don't think much of it as a re-election strategy.

12. Political suicide is not an issue
Any president who tries to confiscate everyone's firearms will have already suspended the constitution. Political suicide would only be an issue if the president planned to have future elections.

10. Didn't this happen in Australia
just a few years ago? First the demanded a federal registry. A few years later they tried to confiscate the citizen's weapons. I'd say it's highly likely for someone to try it here.
