"What's This? Howard Dean Is Also a Reformed Drunk"

Posted by the ChronWatch Founder, Jim Sparkman
Tuesday, November 04, 2003

How many times has the S.F. Chronicle reminded us that George Bush is a reformed drunk? While they grudgingly admit that this is a ''good thing'' from a human point of view, the implication is that you may not want to entrust any really important matters to such a person. Now we learn that the Chron's favorite candidate, Howard Dean, has a remarkably similar background. I guess that admission will end those stories in the Chron. Maybe.

This item is from the LowDown section of the New York Daily News, written by Lloyd Grove.

For his soon-to-be-published campaign manifesto, ''Winning Back America,'' Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean takes a confessional approach. He describes his privileged preppie upbringing, his youthful drunken behavior, and his occasional adventures in petty theft.
''So I quit. Drinking served no useful purpose in my life, and I just got tired of it. I haven't had a drink in over 22 years.''

This looks like it is from a right wing source. It is about 3 hours old. I think that they are slimeballs, but this is also another reason to be wary of Dean. Deaniacs will say he is reformed. Well you guys don't let Bush* off the hook for it. Have at it.

5. well, this is the problem with putting up one rich aristocrat against
another. I doubt it will be an issue, just like Bush's alcoholism isn't an issue.

13. It's in no way a flame bate
We want a biographical contrast to Bush, and the fact that he, Dean, and Kerry were all spoiled upper class Yalies who were drunks/users/partiers for the lions share of there teens, twenties, and thirties on there parents dime is a very important issue.

At least Kerry had a good reason to be "four sheets to the wind"(his own words) considering he spent almost a year in living hell and time on Nixon's enemies list following college.

4. I Know Dean Went Through Hell
As someone who has alcoholics in the family, has been to the meetings, watched people go through detox - it ain't pretty. I may not like the guy much, but you'll never hear me utter a word over this.

Now Captain Cokehead in the office, the one who sent people to death row for crimes he himself committed...

22. Believe me it's not quite as hellish when you're rich
He very well could have had a great time for the most part up until the end.

There is a sharp contrast to the way rich addicts and poor addicts end up. People like Dean had plenty of responsible and resourceful people and influences in his life that would have made it easier to ease him into recovery.

That kind of thing is completly lost on right wingers however. The tools of coping and connections of lives paths

7. Let us define similar
Bush quit drinking in 1988, at age 40, and after several consequences that he had ignored (including a DUI). Dean quit drinking in 1981, at a significantly younger age (32), and with no consequences. In addition there is wedding video of Bush drinking as recently as 1991. There is no such thing for Dean. There is other significant evidence of Bush drinking including the pretzel incident. Nothing like that exists for Dean.

Do you really believe he isn't drinking right now? At least Dean looks sober.

The issue is neither Dean's nor Bush's drinking many years ago. I DID let Bush "off the hook" for it. Is this the best we can do? Oh, by the way, I smoked some pot in college, in the early '70s. OK, now YOU have at it.

29. If * says that everything he did in his "childish" stage
up to say forty, is off limits then anything that any other candidate did that they are not proud of should be accorded the same respect. If not they should all have a prepared question about * doing something wrong when he was younger and say they will have an expalnation after the * gives his. If he says "it has already been fetted" then our candidate gets the same pass.

20. Eh
I rarely drink anymore, probably consume less than a sixpack in a year. Though I did have some raging good times when I was younger, I lost my taste for alcohol. I was never a drunk, never felt the compulsion to drink. From this account, it sounds like Dean just got bored with it like I did. Bush, on the other hand, was a drunk, he was out of control. So how does Dean have a "remarkably similar background" to Dubya's? That's really s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the definition of a "reformed drunk."

24. I'm a long way from being a Dean supporter
or even an apologist for him (Kucinich is My Man). But what's being described here is an experience shared by an awful lot of people. "Show-offish" excessive drinking is pretty much a Rite of Passage. But Dean apparently 'wised up' at marriage. More importantly, he didn't draw a veil of "youthful indescretions" prior to his 40th birthday. FAR more importantly ... (fill in the crack-head chicken-hawk cheer-leading PARASITE details here].

(Haven't had a drink myself for twenty THREE years).
