Who were the 3 Florida Democrats who supported Jeb's campaign?
I have the info somewhere, but I can't find it. I really need to know, because I think one of them is running for Senate.

1. You're right about one of them running for Senate.
Pennelas went with the Cuban cartel in Miami and supported Jebbie in '98.

2. Is that the same Penelas who did not stand behind Gore in 2000?
I did find a couple of articles about that. Didn't he go off on vacation or somewhere during the recount?

3. Yep, he's the same.
I'm strongly leaning towards throwing my support behind Betty Castor in the race.

4. I found this article on Penelas. Finally.

Revenge of the Wimp
It is from 2000.

I still can not find the articles about the 3 democrats. They were all from South Florida, and they endorsed Jeb in 2002.

Castor sounds pretty good right now. Have not checked out others.

Mudslinging Bogs Down Senate Race

>snip
U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch, a candidate in the race, has been launching angry, public attacks at another candidate, Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas over Penelas' conduct during the 2000 race.

Deutsch charges Penelas ``did as much to hurt Al Gore as any person in the United States of America.''

Recently, Deutsch has expanded his attacks, filing a complaint with federal authorities over what he calls illegal fundraising by the Penelas Senate campaign.

>large snip
Party insiders say Penelas hesitated to go all-out for Gore in 2000 because of his political reliance on the Cuban-American community, which was outraged over the Clinton- Gore return of Cuban refugee child Elian Gonzalez to Cuba.

Miami's predominantly Republican Cuban-Americans vote heavily for Penelas, whose mayor's office is nonpartisan.

He has long courted GOP support - last year he held a fundraiser for Republican congressional candidate Mario Diaz-Balart, leading some Democrats to question his party loyalty.

<much more in article, including Penelas' vacation to Spain.

on edit: what the heck happened? Sorry about that. My whole post became the link?!

Don't know what I did wrong. Corrected now, finally.

6. Ha, I have had my posts do that before.
I think it is the brackets or something. You know I think I got that article from the Deutsch newsletter. Not sure. There was no link included, though. I did a search.

I sure want to know who the others are who backed Jeb openly last year. I know I have the article on my hard drive, but Power Desk search won't even turn it up.

9. I don't think that's correct
I don't believe that Penelas supported jeb in '98 (although you are right about the elian thing). I know he didn't support him in 2002. Maybe he gave McKay kind of lukewarm support?

Penelas IS a sorry excuse for a Democrat, IMO. In 2002, he held a fundraiser for Mario Diaz Balart, a republican running for congress against Annie Bettancourt (who is also of Cuban heritage, so he doesn't even have that excuse).

I'm supporting Betty Castor.

7. more than 3 here.
Don't know if this will help. Maybe the names you're trying to remember will appear on this list (or help jog a memory).

Sorry for the delay in response. -time spent searching and personal stuff going on today-

To prove his point, Kunst produces a list of Florida mayors, county sheriffs and other prominent Democrats. Calling them traitors to the Democratic Party or "fifth column Republicans," guilty of openly supporting Republican Jeb Bush's re-election in November, Kunst at first ridicules their treachery. Then, in a more subdued mood, he describes it as "chilling." His list of Democratic "turn-coats" reads:

Democrats for Jeb Steering Committee

Pete Antonacci, Former Florida Statewide Prosecutor, Former Deputy Attorney General
Milton Aponte, Attorney and Activist for the Developmentally Disabled
Charlie Aycock, Osceola County Sheriff
Paula Barton, Baker County Schools Superintendent
Steven Bateman, Homestead City Council Member
Harold Bazzell, Bay County Clerk of Courts
Barney Bishop, Former Executive Director of the Florida Democratic Party
Matti Bower, Miami Beach Commissioner
Cornel Brock, Chairman of Bay County Commission
Larry Campbell, Leon County Sheriff
Theresa Ciummo, Pembroke Park City Commissioner
Howard Clark, Pembroke Park City Commissioner
Bob Crawford, Former Agriculture Commissioner
David Dermer, Mayor of Miami Beach
John Fugate, Desoto County Sheriff
Luis Garcia, Miami Beach Commissioner
Ernie George, President of the Police Benevolent Association
Howard Godwin, Highlands County Sheriff
Dick Greco, Mayor of Tampa
Julia Johnson, Member of the Florida Board of Education
Joe Klock, Chairman and Managing Partner, Steel Hector & Davis LLP
Harold Knowles, Attorney and Trustee, Florida State University
Dr. Bob Levy, Pembroke Park City Manager
Raul Masvidal, Managing Director, Masvidal Partners, Inc.
Manny Medina, CEO of Terremark
Carson McCall, Lafayette County Sheriff
John McDaniel, Jackson County Sheriff
C.K. "Mac" McElyea, Dania Beach City Commissioner
Frank McKeithen, Gulf County Sheriff
Bob Milner, Bradford County Sheriff
Wayne Mixson, Former Governor of Florida
Herb Morgan, Former State Representative
Jim Naugle, Mayor of Fort Lauderdale
Leon Nettles, Wakulla County Commissioner
R. Donahue Peebles, President and CEO of Peebles Atlantic Development Corporation
Fred Peel, Washington County Sheriff
Jeffrey Porter, Homestead City Council Member
James Rider, Glades County Sheriff
Charles Shields, Mayor of St. Marks
Roy Shiver, Vice Mayor of Florida City
Emma Shoaff, Pembroke Park City Commissioner
Ron Silver, Florida State Senator
James Harold Thompson, Former Speaker of the House
Don Tucker, Former Speaker of the House
David Turner, Gilchrist County Sheriff
Steve Uhlfelder, Former Regent, Florida Counsel Clinton/Gore 1996

Keith Wasserstrom, Hollywood City Commissioner
T.K. Wetherell, Former Speaker of the House
Annette Wexler, Mayor of Pembroke Park
W.A. Woodham, Gadsden County Sheriff
Steve Worley, Hendry County Sheriff

YIKES! quite a list.

Is my short list of Democratic candidates- Castor, Deutch, Hastings and Penelas complete? Am I missing anyone?

I'm not finding anything about any of the 4 endorsing or supporting jeb, but I do have very strong anti-Penelas sentiments after getting my Gore v. *jr memories reawakened by the article previously linked.

11. That many Democrats in FL supported Jeb??? I am outraged.
That post deserves its own thread. I think everyone should see that.

I still remember an article of the three who supported him last year. But I now see there were many more.

Greco is very open about it. Shame on him.

8. I did some checking on Penelas
I never could find anything about him supporting Jebbie in '98. I remember hearing that rumour and it may be simply a rumour. I did find plenty blasting him for 2000. He was a big supporter of Gore until the whole Elian saga. He distanced himself during the election because of it. He had previously been mentioned as a possible cabinet memember in a Gore administration. With the slim margin in FL, Gore might have been elected if he had generated more support.

I did find that Penelas didn't support Jebbie in 2002. He was a critic of some of Jebbie's plans such as One Florida and Service First. He was critical, I think, of the Class Size amendment. He was mentioned as a possible Lt Governor for McBride.

I'm not sure which Dems supported Jebbie during 2002. I'll check my links further. Hey, I wonder why Daryl Jones didn't jump in on this Senate Race. He'd be an excellent US senator.
