Bush/Rice 2004?
Sorry if this is a dupe, but it looked pretty new (10/28/03) and appears to be getting fairly well organized:

http://www.bushrice04.org/

I personally can't imagine the Republican party putting an African-American woman on the ticket, not even Condi Rice. I still think that there is too much racism and bigotry in the party to make her a serious candidate for VP.

On the other hand, most Repubs seem to blindly back anyone with an (R) by his or her name. Considering Bush only got 9% or so of the African-American vote in '00, who knows?

Would her presence on the ticket be any competition to the Democratic nominee in the view of African-American voters?

Would she sway enough voters to make a difference?

1. They would do it.
No doubt in my mind. If Cheney decides he needs to spend more time with his family I woundn't be surprised if Rice would be their top choice. THe racists would hold their nose and still vote for Bush.

3. Don't be too sure.
Racism cuts both ways. More blacks might, I repeat might, vote for a Bush/Condi ticket because of having a black in the WH.

6. Big Problem
We on DU know that there are plenty of Rice lies to shoot her credibility all to hell. My feeling is that, if the 9/11 commission is successful, there will be even more.

8. It would hurt us.
If Condi were to replace Cheney:

1. The RW loves Condi. She has made a hit with them. And the racists among them aren't going to split of into a separate party over it because they know it would give the election to us. They have nowhere else viable to go to.

2. It would be enough to make SOME, (NOT ALL, BUT SOME) more blacks vote for the Reps. Since the blacks are part of our base, and any lose of base is serious, then any percentage that would shift to Rep would hurt badly.

10. Condi in 08?
I looked at the web site. They are hoping to use a Bush/Rice ticket in 04 as a stepping stone for a Rice/? ticket in 08. If the Reps run a black woman at the top of the ticket in 08, (Yes, I know its a long shot, but this is a thread about that possibility.) then I think we would see massive black turnout for such a candidate. Lots of women would vote for her too, that might not otherwise vote for a Rep.

She would be a very formidable candidate. She is articulate and has her PhD so we wouldn't be able to hang a dummy label on her.

In short, she is dangerous to us.

11. I disagree,
Condi appears to be completely incompetent in her current position. She didn't take the Clinton's admininstrations warnings about Osama seriously, she couldn't imagine that anyone would fly an airplane into a building, she doesn't know a hell of a lot of things she should know in her position, she doesn't read the CIA memos prepared for her, she can't remember that a statement can't be supported by fact and shouldn't be in the POTUS's speech for a short 3 month period of time (a very important statement!!) and she lies everytime her opens her mouth to the press.
What the hell is this women doing in her current position and who in their right mind would vote to put her in an even higher position????

13. More dangerous than you can possibly imagine
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 01:13 PM by grok
Granted, she has ALOT of negatives. Many, many instances of "lying" you can point to. Credibility issues up the ying yang.

But she has innoculation folks. She is Black, and she is a woman. Both are absolutely VITAL for Democrats to have a hope to crush Bushie. If she can cut into the deeply into any of that support, we are cooked. To attack her we have to be so frigging careful not to alienate either. Remember Clarence Thomas? Granted, any reasonably intelligent Black knows the truth NOW, but that's after the fact. Too late.

And the people we have to deal with are the uninformed swing voter. Black or white. Woman or man. Those that can be swung on emotion, not reason.

Rice has to be destroyed NOW!

Grok

Karl Rove has already picked Bill Frist for the job.

22. It only takes a percentage.
What if 5% of the blacks and women, who otherwise would have voted Dem go Rep because of Condi? What would losing 5% of our base do to us? Remember, that's only 1 in 20.

I repeat - she is dangerous.

Never underestimate the Republican will to win. I think they will suck it up(on the abortion issue) in order to win.

20. I never would, believe me.
Floating Bush/Rice is just a feint meant to gull moderates. It's exactly the same pattern of politics as constantly bringing up Hillary as an '04 candidate.

Dems could play the game too. I hear Ashcroft might replace Cheney in '04. Have you heard? ;-)

15. Her voice cracks when she lies.
Which means when she is saying anything more profound then “I had toast for breakfast” it sounds like she is going to cry. So unless Chimp shares his stash of happy pills there isn't much hope for Condi.

19. Very formidable
Once announced, her first appearance would be with Oprah. Let's set the scene.

Oprah "Now Condi - I'm sorry, I mean Doctor Rice. I know a secret about you. -- When you were young you used to be a figure skater."

Rice "Very young."

Oprah "We've got pictures."

Rice "Oh no"

Oprah "Let's run the tape... oh look at how cute you are..."

Rice "ummm" while audience goes nuts with laughter and applause

Oprah "That's not all ladies. Boys, let's wheel that out onto the stage. Audience - did you know that Dr Rice is also a concert-level pianist?" audience gasps -- "What do you think audience? do we want Beethoven or Mozart?"

Rice "Being President Bush's National Security advisor while we're fighting a war on terrorism doesn't give me much time to practice Oprah, but I like to play this to myself at home while I'm thinking about our brave soldiers sacrificing for us in Iraq."

Very formidable.

24. Not a chance
There is zero chance of the GOP having a black on the national ticket. None.

If something happens to Bush, she would be President. The only thing worse from the point of view of your average Bush voter than a black woman president would be President Hillary Clinton.

No way the right will take that chance at all .

25. Bad move for Bush.
Rice does two things. First, she reinforces the image of Bush being a hardliner, at a time when he's plunged the natino into a mess.

Second, the rumour mill says her skeleton closet is deep and wide.
