Here in Dade County I see lots of teenagers and young people hanging around outside around 12 PM and all day. Is truancy a problem in Florida?

Why do so many people skip school in Florida? Or is school only a half a day in some places?

They only have half day schedules, even if they don't have to report to work until after the end of the school day. Some kids go to the New World School of the Arts downtown for half a day, so they're enroute.

I can't think of a single public school that doesn't allow the kids to go off campus for lunch, so they're out there in droves during their lunch periods. Lunches for students could be scheduled as early as 10:30 in the morning; they aren't always 12noon to 1pm.

Then there are the many magnet schools (most Miami-Dade schools are magnet schools) that provide intensive study of one field or another (Marine Biology, Performing Arts, Science & Mathematics, etc). The students could be enroute to activities, or completing assignments, off campus.

Finally, there are some students who are truant.

3. I don't know about that but...

Why do they provide such run down buildings for students to go to school in? I come from a place that HATES funding schools, yet the schools there are far better kept. The schools here in Tallahassee that I have seen are shabby, run down buildings that look like they were just thrown together on a lick and a prayer. Are schools in Florida all like this, or is it just here in Tallahassee?

I couldn't believe it when I read about a year ago that only HALF of high-schoolers graduate. I am from the NorthEast, so I don't get it....neither does my husband.

I moved here form NY last year. Education in not a prized commodity here. They're much more proud of their cars, guns,ear splitting stereos, pick-ups and rebel flag decals. Now they're trying another scheme to graduate seniors (the ones that actually stick around to graduate) in their Junior year! No self respecting college is going to admit students who don't have a rudimentary grasp of varied subjects, thus perpetuating the ignorance level here. That's just the way Republicans like them though, stupid and pliable. Jeb doesn't want to abide by the mandate for smaller classes so he's going to screw the education system up even further just to show the people of Florida who's boss. He's such a pompous ass, a characteristic that seems to permeate the entire family.
