My deepest thank you to DU angels: You saved my son
I sent my son off to the Guard tonight, after a lunch with him, and while he polished his boots he got a call from his Sgt.
He said the Sgt warned him that he might get fragged by the 1st Sgt tonight for sooooooooooooooooo many calls his Unit has gotten from Sen Levins office on allowing my son his legal discharge on Nov 13.
A great number of the unit were supposed to be discharged from MI, and denied their legal discharge, over to the Middle East ...due to the BFEE STOPLOSS
Instead, my son got to the Unit and , after an hour, called me
"Mom...get ready......all those calls to Levins office, all the emails, all the stink you and your friends made...they arent sending me anywhere...they arent even making me go to camp...they said they were under too much pressure now to do so because of all those emails and letters, they are sending me once a month to work at the local armory and discharge me in January for good".
The Sgt also told my son "Your mother was right to worry...just because we tell the unit we are going one place doesnt mean we are...its a mess at every rank right now..no one knows what they are doing, and where they are sending anyone...so your mother was right to be concerned..the military could have sent all of you to Iraq or anywhere they wanted to, they have no idea what they are doing now..anyway heres the deal.....You wont be sent, you wont even go to camp...Until the StopLoss is over in January, all you have to do is come to the Armory once a month til Jan . Thats it...You WORK once a month for a weekend til Jan and you will BE DISCHARGED!!!!!!!!!!"
Now, this was the 1st sergeant..hes the one who says the things that are coming down. He is the one My son says has the last word. No bullshit.
Therefore, I point my finger at all of YOU AND SAY
You saved my son, WILL PITT, with that Op Ed on Truthout, with emails to Levin, with emails to your Congresspeople, with HOPE that you gave me, my son will NOW NOT GO OVERSEAS...
He wont be discharged on Nov 13, but he will be discharged when the StopLoss is finished in January on the Guard and Reserves. (God I hope they do)
What can I say to thank all of you???? How can I show you even a small amount of the tears in my eyes as I write this...finally, tears of joy??? How can I thank you????
I Know he wont be out in Nov...but he will be out in January..I know I cant totally trust what more could happen, hell no one trusts the military these days...BUT...he's not being sent. Hes almost out..the heat was Put ON!!! and it worked..
See..we can do it..we can do it..we can save these lives we can march and scream and complain and make such a stink they HAVE to listen to us..every kid they try to send over, every kid thats over there, every kid being clusterf*cked by the military run by Rumsfield..we can save them if we fight..and fight...and fight
I dont know how to thank all of you, but I can tell you this..
Your kindness to me will always be in my heart, and Will Pitt, you and all the DUers on here are to me,
angels.
DU angels. All of you.
Much Love,
Marianne

111. But this shows what a truly united effort can do.
Let's do it for every one of the men and women over there, and the ones in the wings.

Besides, if the entire National Guard is overseas, what happens if another attack occurs over here?

"....To us the willingness or unwillingness of this or that French corporal to serve a second term appears as much a cause as Napoleon's refusal to withdraw his troops beyond the Vistula and to restore the Duchy of Oldenburg, for had the corporal refused to serve, and had a second, a third, a thousands corporals and privates, also refused, Napoleon's army would have been so greatly reduced that the war could not have taken place."

gasoline to keep my son from going. Any parent would. This is an illegal war, my sons time was up, and the BFEE wont let them go. His legal discharge was Nov 13, and he was being denied it....just as many of them are.
He already served his time. Bush just snuck out DURING his time...my son wont even get OUT on his LEGAL discharge date due to stoploss...thank god he wont be sent anywhere, thanks to DUers.

I didn't lift a finger, just a short prayer and good wishes that this would be resolved and he would be able to stay with you. (I had a younger brother in PGW I, and in the 1960's when we were kids I used to dream that he got killed in Vietnam.) So I have no claim to your gratitude, but I am so very happy for you.

If only a similar huge campaign would work with all the other NG's and reservists and regular military.

28. Congrats !! Here's how to get this war over right now.......
encourage your family and friends who have kids in the service to keep them home. To go AWOL to go UA. Set up an "underground railroad" if you will. If the gov't sees enough of these guys just staying home and saying in essence - F**k this, I ain't goin' back, then the gov't will have to concede to the people.

I know. Easy for me to say. I should know how hard it is. I was in the military too. But beleive me. It takes MORE GUTS not to go, than to go.

Marianne - congratulations and all our love! HOW WONDERFUL to have such great news. It's nice to know that SOMETIMES these things actually do work!

Let's all keep that pressure on - not only to keep our boys from having to go over there (or to come home sooner than later and END THIS F-ING WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) AND...

DEMAND A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR FOR TRAITOR-GATE!!!!

If we can bring pressure to bear on behalf of one of our sons, we can bring pressure to bear on behalf of EVERYONE IN OUR COUNTRY - to be liberated from these bastards, thugs, thieves, and traitors!!!!!!

I'm trying to find a way to rejoice for you and your son without worrying about what some 'sergeant' has said. I guess what I'm trying to say without being pessimistic is, don't trust the bastards until there's written confirmation.

I'm remembering a phrase from Ronnie Raygun ("trust but verify")...these days my inclination is more like to say "question and double-check."

Good thoughts ---------------->>>>>>>>>>> to you.

Sounds like a decent guy. It's ridiculous, sending Nat'l Guard, who are supposed to be the new hometown militia, into combat on the other side of the planet. Insane. What if Canada launched an invasion? We'd be practically defenseless! *grumble*

My son just called me, hes on his way home....they handed out paperwork to everyone but him and another guy...they told my son and the other guy..."Go home, throw away the deployment paperwork..you wont need it...You are both out, good luck..."
My son said he and his friend ran right out to their trucks and went home..

141. marianne...... at the DC Rally
while the MFSO group was onstage, I was so glad to be able to relay the information about your son to another DUer (liberallibrarian) who had not seen this thread.

i told you DU could be an awesome force many posts back. i never doubted they would come through for you.

the most powerful speaker (for me) was the father who had lost his son in iraq. speaking in spanish (with a translator) his personal expression of pain and rage was extraordinary. the crowd went wild for him.

again, best wishes

139. It will be a tough row to hoe...
However, many of the parts are already in place; the lies, deception, war profiteering, same-ole-same-ole Republican oppression and cronyism. But my sense is that the ball is in fact rolling. And the ball, if I may even say this on DU; but the ball is clearing rolling in the right direction. The incursion into Iraq never was American enough. Robber Barron enough; Bush family oligarchy enough? Clearly. American enough? No. Woe unto any who may impinge upon our American freedoms truly? I'll be the first to tell you that that dog won't hunt. Invade our lands with a supposed impunity? Osama? No. But seriouly...Saddam Hussein? I rather doubt it. He was already in a box; a box stamped: Made In The U.S.A., and, to say the very least; a rather known quanity as such.

We further these cause' by calling all spades as spades and the likes of neo-con trash as just what they are = an affront to the precepts, the articles of America The Beautiful ~

So instead of your son going the next kid on the list goes who would not have gone otherwise. that kid is killed! Does that make your son just as much as a bastard as draft dodgers in the 60’s like Drugie Limbaugh?

No, sir, that was not "just a question." It was an attempt to attack using manipulative guilt.

Mari333 is in no way responsible for the death of someone else's child. I suggest that you look first to the bad and illegal policies that put these young people in harm's way. Second, I suggest that you take yourself to the idea that if other mothers followed her example, more of their children would be spared this madness.

As a parent myself, I find your interrogative accusation offensive in the extreme.

Id be marching today but I had to be home with my son yesterday
Ive been working hard calling congresspeople, writing letters, working with moveon and if you want to help these kids
www.mfso.org

I didnt just suddenly become antiwar due to my son, or my stepson who is in the Army Reserves, I have always been antiwar and always worked against the tyranny and fascism admin such as this one. But there was no way I wasnt going to fight it when it hit home like it did.

113. I met a woman at the county dentist office the other day...
...while applying for a series of low cost (which amounts to little more than 'military dental care'), no-insuance teeth extractions. She was bubbley, African-American, and considered herself old at 44 having started her family rasing 4 children on her own from the age of 16. Her son, who was studying graphic arts in San Franciso, nevertheless ended up the the army having bought the tuition presentation and so he is now fighting in Tikrit, Saddam's: Home Town. He sends money home to his Mother who puts it away for him. But the military has serverly restricted his communications rending his e/mails very curt and distant to say the very least. Or perhaps it is the nature of the environment in which they have been thrust.

We will never know so far away. Only they will know for sure.

Now DU'ers it's time to badger all of our senators. They need to twist the Commander-in-chief's arm to turn the Iraq mess over to the United Nation's peacekeepers and postwar reconstruction teams to get the rest of our troops back. They, not us need to be in charge. We also need to make it very clear to them that they can't be handing Bush unfettered powers to start wars all over the planet.

Mari, that is so amazing. Your story touched me -- I am a mother of a young boy, 7 years old, and I know that I would react much in the same way you did. Don't mess with mom, as someone else said here.

This is also proof that grassroots organizing does work, that we can have our voices heard. We need to continue to raise our objections, for all of the men and women over there and their families.

And Will Pitt, you are once again a hero. Nice job. We're so glad you're on our side.
