Bush says he's first president to want a Palestinian state?
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 09:16 AM by _Wayne_
Today's top story on yahoo

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031022/pl_nm/bush_indonesia_dc_11

snip

Asked about the apparent bias toward Israel, the Muslim leaders quoted Bush as saying:

"Our foreign policy is for development of a Palestinian state that lives side by side with Israel in peace. I was the first president to ever articulate that position, and I still believe it is possible."

Hmmm...

It took me 10 seconds to find the story below

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031011/ap_on_re_mi_ea/mideast_israel_palestinians_1

Earlier in the day, Khairi told The Associated Press the talks were a bid to revive peace negotiations based on earlier talks and a plan proposed by former President Clinton at a meeting of Palestinian and Israeli leaders in Camp David in July 2000.

That plan projected a Palestinian state in Gaza and about 95 percent of the West Bank as well as parts of traditionally Arab eastern Jerusalem, including limited sovereignty over a Muslim shrine that abuts the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site.

1. Well, there is one crucial difference
Clinton wanted a separate region set aside for Palestenians.

The only "state" Bush wants for them is the state of nonexistance.

Its only a matter of time before the Bush junta starts wiping out all muslims, in the glorious name of God Himself.

4. He'd had a couple of drinks.
What he meant to say was that he is in favor of a Presbyterian state.

he was the first UNELECTED, illegitimate "president" to want a Palestinian state.

9. Ummm. Yea. He was.
Sad to say, Bush actually is the first U.S. President to make a Palestinian state an official part of U.S. foreign policy. Clinton certainly acted to further a Palestinian state, but never made it official policy.

12. plan proposed by former President Clinton is not "official policy"?
If a President proposes a plan - it is the State Dept's job to follow that plan - thus it is "official policy".

Talking heads and talk shows amd media pundits do not make policy or reveal policy.

Would Clinton have to say "this proposal is the only way to go" before it is official policy.

The road map is dead - does that mean we have no official policy, or is it that Bush has an official policy that is going nowhere?

I thought our policy always changes with new facts, and today's proposal by the President is official policy until a new policy becomes the direction of the government.

It sounds like Bush is once more a liar. But that is just my opinion.

:-)

13. Bush SAID: "I was the first president to ever articulate that position."
He did NOT say "I was the first president to make the goal of a Palestinian state official U.S. Policy."

In short, HE LIED.

You are being very Clintonesque in your word-parsing (besides simply being wrong).

14. But what do you expect from a man who also said:
"See, free nations are peaceful nations. Free nations don't attack each other. Free nations don't develop weapons of mass destruction." — (Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. 3, 2003)

Don't you love his use of the word 'see', as if he's teching those of us who are too slow to 'get it'? He is so condescending, which is amazing because he has little to no grounds to be so.

Maybe he meant to say:
"See, free nations don't attack EACH OTHER. We attack UN-FREE nations (which is anyone we say is un-free). And we didn't DEVELOP WMDs. We simply INHERITED them from those earlier, UN-FREE (Democrat) administrations. Everybody knows the bomb was developed under Teddy Roosevelt's administration, or was it Freddy, or Franklin...? Whatever. The point is that WE are now FREE, and WE don't develop WMDs. Those ongoing programs you've read about for a new generation of nukes? I don't know what you're talking about. Probably some liberal media myth!"

He was confused over the hot-button issue of statehood for Palestine, TX. (right below Harris County wastewater assurance standards commission appointees)

16. That is indeed correct.
He is the first, and hopefully not the last. It's actually, in itself, a step forward. Of course he would be supporting a Bantustan without real sovereignty, but it's something. Eventually I suspect the Likud may support a "state" in order to force out the Israeli Arabs. They're deathly afriad of this minority--especially the thought that it may soon be the majority.

21. What is Bush correct about?
At best, his statement is misleading. At worst, an outright lie.

Clinton wanted a Palestinian state. What is "official U.S. policy?" Is there a document somewhere with A-Z current U.S. policy? Not that I know of.

The problem is semantic- and Clinton did as much to encourage a Palestinian state as any President.
