want to call a scammer from the holidays?
Lotto fraud hits Tehachapi

by Deanna Call

Tehachapi News Reporter

A check in the mail isn’t always what it appears to be.

Several Tehachapi residents have reported incidents of what appears to be mail fraud. “Money Camp International Lotto Services” is the name on the correspondence.
.....

The scam works like this: Money Camp send residents a notification that they have won hundreds of thousands of dollars in the lotto. They are advised that they must pay a processing fee in order to claim their prize. Money Camp includes a check for a few thousand dollars to help the “winner” pay the processing fee. The recipient is instructed to call a phone number to arrange payment of the fee.

When the “winner” calls the number, they discover that the check from Money Camp isn’t quite enough to cover the fee and they must send in some of their own funds in order to get their huge prize. Then, when they try to cash the check from Money Camp, they discover that it is drawn on an invalid account.

The number provided to the “winner” is 416-731-5407. The “winner” is told to ask for Barbara Martins or Franklin King. The Tehachapi News spoke with a man at this number who identified himself as Franklin King. Once he discovered that he was speaking with a member of the press, he hung up the phone.
