Narcicism destroying this country?
"My Way is The Right Way and All others have failings that are Wrong and I'll Never forgive."
"The opposition is enemy."
"Everything that I know is the way it is, and you have an in-correct set of beliefs."
Super Power? Why do we 'advertise' to the rest of the population on this globe that WE are the 'bomb'?

1. You got it- not all that 'different' but clearly alot more blaitent
and with a pride-full arrogance.

When bush refused to talk about his past (wouldn't admit coke habit)- AND GOT AWAY WITH IT- when Clinton was scorned and hated for smoking pot- When he blew off lying about his DWI saying it was because "i wanted to be a good role model for my daughters"- and people just swallowed it...---

3. Poor choices based on narcicism? Or fear?
I am worn down.

We're all worn down. No "normal" population could process all that this nation has been through in the last five years.

It may not be narcicism, so much as it is fear.

And fear is intensified when people are exhausted.

4. Narcissism And Arrogance
Hallmarks of the BushCo/GOP/PNAC plan to divide our nation and fracture any cohesive groups of voters into shards that cannot be put back together again.

5. jingoism has a long tradition in the US

but the narcicism you name (which is an element of it) has taken enormous proportions due to the successes of the US after WWII. Most Americans don't understand that "there is a world out there" (even sometimes at DU) and besides that the solutions found in the "outside world" are at least equal if not better to the US solutions. The American model (dream) is not longer perceived as "THE" only real solution, specially in Europe, but even in other parts of the world.

this makes the famous question "why do they hate us ?" preposterous. The world has other solutions, even if a common ground regarding democracy is the common aspiration. But it doesn't have to be a democracy of American model, being stil a very valid democracy.

6. Narcissism
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 05:18 PM by marions ghost
in this country is not limited to elected officials. It is in epidemic proportions in the rest of the population, especially among those who are in positions of power. You could argue that the personality disorder known as Narcissism can facilitate an individual's rise to power and influence. The narcissist has the ability to focus on his/her own goals at others' expense, believes that his judgment is always best, and believes that he deserves everything he gets no matter how he achieves it. When challenged, even on small matters, he becomes vicious. Narcissists are shrewd and stalk their victims by stealth.

We all know, work with, and are related to narcissists. It is a pervasive affliction that can be very destructive. Our current government is testimonial to that...we are being "led" by a pack of of pathological narcissists. That's why it feels like abuse instead of leadership. People need to be more aware of the dangers of these people. They exist all around us and are difficult to identify because the narcissist appears to be functional in society. They are teachers, bankers, doctors, lawyers, builders, clergymen, community leaders --you name it.
