Although a Thanksgiving protest at President Bush's ranch drew little attention, anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan continues her media campaign in the January issue of Vanity Fair magazine with a two-page photo spread of her apparently asleep on the grassy grave of her son Casey, who was killed in battle in Iraq. In the magazine's 2005 Best of the Best year-end review – "Heroes! Winners! Guilty Pleasures!" – Sheehan is selected as "Best Stand."
The photo, noted by Byron York in National Review's The Corner, shows her at the Vacaville-Elimira Cemetery in Vacaville, Calif. In a post to the weblog, National Review columnist Jonah Goldberg said it "may be the most shameless, exploitative stunt of the decade."
Sheehan has been on an anti-war and anti-Bush campaign since the summer months when her vigil in Crawford gained worldwide media attention. Earlier this month, the Associated Press defended itself from allegations by Sheehan that it misrepresented her book-signing near Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch by showing a virtually empty tent.
Casey Sheehan was killed April 4 at age 24 when his unit from Fort Hood, Texas, was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Baghdad. He had been in Iraq only two weeks.
