YES!!! Helen Thomas points the finger at PNAC!!
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 05:11 AM by LunaC
If youve been here for any length of time, you know my passion is to educate everyone I can, whenever I can, about PNAC. Along the way I sent Helen Thomas the link to PNAC 101 - Rise of the Neocons in the hopes that she would start exposing their existence. Lo and behold, shes doing just that! (Bless her ass-kicking heart!)

Helen Thomas: Journalists are Now 'Soul Searching' After 'Playing Dead' Since 9/11

Helen Thomas, arguably the nations best known print journalist and dean of the White House press corps, told a Falls Church audience last week that there is a lot of soul searching going on now among news professionals about uncritical coverage since 9/11 of the Bush administration and its policies

The press has rolled over and played dead, Thomas said of its behavior in recent years. Our main weapon is skepticism. It is our indispensable role to protect the peoples right to know, she said. But it failed to live up to that role in recent years.

-snip-

Only now is the press starting to come out of its coma, she said, noting that Katrina helped out. It turned reporters loose

But we still are not asking the big question about Iraq, she added, Which is why?, why did we invade if there were no weapons of mass destruction, if there was no link of Saddam Hussein to al Qaeda.

-snip-

Why not demand a real explanation from the president on why he invaded Iraq? she reiterated. She offered her own theory, that the invasion reflected the wishes of a tight circle in the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) obsessed with a lust for empire in the Middle East that would eventually extend the invasion of Iraq to Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan and Egypt

-snip-

She said that she looks for her fellow journalists to live up to their responsibility to truth and accuracy, and their role to hold public officials accountable. She said democracy is defined as that wherein it is safe to be a minority, where, quoting JFK, she said, The weak are secure and the strong are just.

---------------

Helen also slammed Snotty Scotty and his use of Guckert as a shill. Man, oh man, I love that woman!

It's the elephant in the room that no one dare mention. And yes, there is most definitely a relationship with the history of PNAC.

2. The problem is unless the MSM actually starts printing
articles about PNAC, or asking questions in press conferences, then no one will know. I would be surprised if 50% of the populations even knew what PNAC was

Don't get me wrong, I am sure Falls Church Va is a very nice community, but will it go beyond Falls Church Va?

4. The word *IS* getting out!
Slowly but surely.....

From Scripps Howard News Service - December 6

The U.S. in Iraq: One war, many rationales

-snip-

Former President Jimmy Carter, for example, contends that Bush's lieutenants came to office hoping for an opportunity to establish an American foothold in the Middle East, and saw the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as an opportunity.

-snip-

Carter argues that, even before the September 2001 terrorist attacks, key members of Bush's administration wanted to march to Baghdad to establish an American beachhead.

"They had decided to go to war against Iraq before George Bush was elected," Carter told reporters on his recent book tour.

Indeed, two months before the 2000 election, a prominent neoconservative think thank, Project for the New American Century, issued a report that made the case for a bigger military presence in the Middle East.

"The United States has for decades sought to play a more permanent role in Gulf regional security," the report said. "While the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein."

47. PNAC
I used to think I was reasonably well-informed, but I'd never heard of PNAC until I heard Cindy Sheehan mention it in an interview. Then I googled it - Wow. It's good that it's getting out there, even in brief mentions; people who are curious will know how to find out more info. I think policitians have mentioned it as well; it only seems to be the media that has a blackout on this organization.

7. Two fine quotes from Helen Thomas' talk:
She said democracy is defined as that wherein it is safe to be a minority, where, quoting JFK, she said, The weak are secure and the strong are just.

Democracy dies behind closed doors, she added, recalling the words of a rabbi who was a survivor of the holocaust. The greatest sin of the Nazi era, the rabbi said, was silence.

Pretty telling - and chilling - that she was moved to quote a survivor of Nazi Germany. And the author of the newspaper article chose to end the article with this quote as well. The fascism of the Bush Administration is more overt every day. The rest of the world sees it.

I've also sent impassioned pleas to expose the PNAC to numerous Congress Critters. At one point, the demopedia link had 300 hits *overnight* right after one of my email campaigns and I've often wondered if the info was being passed around the hallowed halls of DC.

Jay Rockefeller "knows" because he made subtle reference to them after the first Intelligence Committee report but I want it to be Common Knowledge, dammit! With Helen putting the spotlight on them, maybe I can finally get some rest. lol

17. What has seemed bizarre to me is that PNAC was mentioned in the
media years ago -- but nothing ever came of it.

Frontline's "The War Behind Closed Doors" (February 2003) and ABC's Nightline, in particular, reported that the group existed, but there was no outrage over the content of their proposal. There was no focus on such language as needing a "new Pearl Harbor". The arrogant bastards of PNAC fame were interviewed and crowed with pride. It was appalling then, as it is now. I hope more people wake up and pay attention. I hope they listen to Helen Thomas.

18. It wasn't "relevant" until recently
Now that more and more people are asking "Why?", it's easier and more relevant to bring up the PNAC and slide it into the discussion.

The DSM was the first crack in the door, followed by Cindy Sheehan, the Dems revolting and demanding Phase Two of the Intelligence Committee report and, most recently, Murtha's criticisms. The public has been perfectly primed and I have no doubt it *will* eventually break in a big way......all in good time.

I have been harping on this same issue myself with friends and colleagues ever since finding out about it shortly after 9/11. 4 years later, most people still have no idea the depth of involvement PNAC has in the entire Iraqnam mess.

experiencing it. Major props to Ray Taliaferro, who was the first person (or one of the first people) in this country to rail about PNAC. He posted it on his website. That was before the October 2002 Iraq Resolution. I downloaded the document, then called my Congressman and Senators about it. They couldn't have cared less.

And to Helen- We're Not Worthy! :applause:

It seems that most people are in denial. I tried to have a PNAC Primer on another website and rather thatn read it the righties laughed off William Kristol as though he couldn't have any adverse effect on anything. Just yesterday a caller mentioned it on C-spn, again and as usual the question got kind of shoved off and the moderator just said that they are not familiar with them.

How frickin long can some of these professional journalists go without familiarizing themselves with the PNAC? I think they know more than they let on, but the word is Handsoff. The crime family and the whitewash commission don't want people looking behind the curtain.

Is when they'll have some commentator on w/o even mentioning that he is a member. So he'll just start spinniing & repeating PNAC talking points - but is listed as a completely independent observor. No wonder people are confused! PNAC seems to be just a neo-con think tank; but they're enormously influential now that so many are in power. I just can't understand why the media wouldn't at least mention the organization - they do w/Heritage Group, AEI or other think tanks.

I recently sent you info re: the PNAC in the hopes that youd use your position as a well-respected journalist to expose them. I jumped for joy when I read about your recent talk to the Democratic Business Council of Northern Virginia in the Falls Church News-Press.

I dont know if I had any influence on you or if you were already familiar with them, but Im grateful that youve spoken publicly about the PNAC and are assisting in the effort to inform and educate the public. THANK YOU! Your voice gives the subject credibility and takes it out of the shadows into the light of day.

In case you dont know, youve got quite a following at DemocraticUnderground.com where you are honored, respected and adored. On behalf of the forum, thank you again for your courage and tenacity in speaking Truth to Power and demanding accountability from this Administration. You are a True Journalist in a profession too often populated by lackeys, hacks and cowards, and your efforts are VERY much appreciated!

Keep givin em hell, Helen, and know that your fans are cheering wildly in the background!

39. Lemmee give you some ammo - Here's what I just sent to C-Span
The big question in the news these days is WHY? Why are we fighting a war in Iraq?

While many callers to Washington Journal have mentioned the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) in answer to the burning question of the day, their commentaries are quickly cut off. Perhaps theyre not receiving more air-time because the subject hasnt been reported in the news but this is an oversight thats rapidly changing.,

The Falls Church News-Press just covered a talk Helen Thomas gave to the Democratic Business Council of Northern Virginia where she told the attendees that the Iraq invasion reflected the wishes of a tight circle in the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) and their obsession with a lust for empire in the Middle East.

http://fcnp.com/540/thomasnews.htm

The Scripps Howard News Service - December 6 - also reports the following:

Recent excerpts from other media sources follow so you can fully appreciate the validity and pertinence of the PNAC.
========================

In 1992, Libby and former Pentagon deputy Paul Wolfowitz wrote a paper favoring the use of pre-emptive force to prevent countries from developing weapons of mass destruction. The paper later won praise from the neoconservative Project for the New American Century, which called it "a blueprint for maintaining U.S. pre-eminence, precluding the rise of a great power rival."

=========================

Throughout the 1990s Libby -- along with Wolfowitz, Feith, Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, and a slew of other leading defense and foreign policy officials -- clamored to finish the job they failed to complete in the 1991 Persian Gulf War: removing Saddam Hussein as the first step to installing Western-style democracy throughout the Middle East.

In the late 1990s, Libby was among those associated with the Project for a New American Century, a think tank that publicly urged President Clinton to use military force to remove Hussein from power.

I. LEWIS "SCOOTER' LIBBY JR.

Founding member of the Project for a New American Century with Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, Jeb Bush and others, 1997.

========================

The leader of the team was Libby, Cheney's chief of staff. Libby had studied at Yale with Paul Wolfowitz, who brought him to Washington. He co-authored a hawkish policy document with Wolfowitz in the Department of Defense for its head, Dick Cheney, after the Gulf War in 1992. When it was leaked, it embarrassed the first President Bush. Libby was a founding member of the Project for a New American Century in 1997 during the Clinton years, when many neoconservatives were out of office. The PNAC attempted to use the Republican-dominated Congress to pressure Clinton to take a more belligerent stance toward Iraq, and it advocated significantly expanding military spending and using U.S. troops as "gendarmes" in the aftermath of wars to "shape" the international security environment.

Makiya's work provided ammunition for the neoconservatives who were seeking a role for the United States (and for themselves) after the Cold War. Robert Kagan was one of this group, William Kristol another, Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle two more. The glue of the group was a belief that the United States must exploit its enhanced, post-Soviet hegemony to refashion the politics of the planet in a democratic mold. Under the banner of the Project for a New American Century, they published an open letter to President Clinton in 1998 calling for regime change in Iraq.

=========================

The fifteen-month PR blitz conducted by the White House was a massive fraud designed to trick the public into accepting a goal that Bush's advisers had held even before the election. A strategy document Dick Cheney commissioned from the Project for a New American Century, written in September 2000, for example, asserts that "the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein." But, as the document reflects, the Administration hawks knew the public would not agree to an attack against Iraq unless there were a "catastrophic and catalyzing event--like a new Pearl Harbor."

======================

Bushs electoral success originates from the coalition of neo-conservatives such as Cheney and Rumsfeld, and their experience of government going back to the Reagan era coupled with the fundamentalist Christian right-wing. Their foreign policy agenda advocated by aggressive conservatives such as the former assistant secretary of defence, Richard Perle was on hold until 9/11. Those attacks changed everything, with the war on terror opening up the opportunity for all the key players involved in the Project for a New American Century such as Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle and Wolfowitz to solve the problem of the Middle East their way.

========================
After the initial Senate Intelligence Committee Report was completed, Senator Jay Rockefeller said It was clear to all of us in this room who were watching that, and to many others, that they had made up their mind that they were going to go to war. And I believe to this day, and I always have and Ive said so publicly many times in regretting my vote, that there was a predetermination, even going back to 1998 in a (PNAC) letter to Bill Clinton, saying, "The time for diplomacy has ended and now is the time for the use of military force."

Clearly, the PNAC is a timely topic and worthy of public discussion on Washington Journal. I hope you will consider giving this subject the attention it deserves.

Sincerely,

41. Hard to search your soul when you don't have one.
I love Helen Thomas, she's the best. Called Bush the "Worst president, ever," what seems like ages ago. There may be a few journalists who are "soul searching" but I suspect damn few. I don't think there are many real "journalists" left. What we have are mostly propaganda voices of one sort and another, mostly prostitutes for the right wing. These maniacal machines masquerading as human beings have no soul.

85. Would anyone have believed him if he did?
The media was stacked against him - he would likely have been called a conspiracy nut. The people who would even look into it were likely already with him. The other thing is that even a few months after the election at the innaugeral the basic PNAC idea in sugar coated form was sold. All the media was overwhelmingly positive. (Before the election, a NYT op-ed spoke of Bush's ideas as idealist and broad vision while Kerry (and other Democrats) were seen as just pragmatic.)

66. That rotten.com page is great!

Lot's of really good, and serious, talking points and it summarizes everything well within the current context.

On the down side, the next item on the PNAC agenda is an invasion of Iran, which appears to be depressingly inevitable. And Islamic extremists in the Persian Gulf have an extremely long memory. At this rate, it might a lot longer than 95 years to "preserve and extend an international order friendly to American security, American prosperity and American principles."

77. So at what point do we stop saying the MSM is ignoring this, and
start saying there is a massive cover-up going on?

There is a big difference between MSM just not paying enough attention to something important, but not sexy enough to sell advertising, and between MSM not covering it bcs they've been paid off, or threatened/blackmailed.

83. It seems to be an untouchable subject
Considering the number of people I've contacted, begging and pleading to please, PLEASE put the spotlight on PNAC, giving them a HUGE story of great importance and pertinence, doing their homework and laying the foundation for them, and - other than Helen - getting zero response, I can only conclude that a Fear Factor is involved. That's why Helen's bold statements are so impoortant.....maybe others will be brave enough to bring the sordid Truth to the public's attention. One can only hope that the environment is changing for that to occur someday.

88. Who else?
Good question! I wish I knew. Post #39 has a few publications that have mentioned PNAC in passing but nothing in depth. Trying to contact the reporters of those stories directly usually hits a brick wall...they don't really want to talk to us Common Folk. That's why I'm so dedicated to getting the word out to "the people" any way I can. If you have any other suggestions for disseminating this info, please let me know.

I've thought of asking DU members to find just one website each to highlight or at least link to PNAC 101 to massively spread the word but too many people like to sit around bitching and moaning rather than getting actively involved. So I'm pretty much a One-Man Band for the most part in this regard.
