BERLIN (AP) - A U.S. diplomat informed Germany's interior minister in 2004 that a German citizen claimed to have been mistakenly abducted by the CIA, the government said Wednesday.

Separately, the minister at that time, Otto Schily, said in an interview to be published Thursday that the United States failed to respond in "appropriate form" to a request for information about Khaled al-Masri, the Lebanese-born German national making the allegations. It was not known when that request was made.

The Interior Ministry announcement comes as several European nations investigate allegations the CIA ran secret jails on the continent and transported terrorist suspects through European airports.

Al-Masri alleged in a lawsuit filed in the United States on Tuesday that the CIA took him to Afghanistan and tortured him after mistakenly identifying him as having ties to al-Qaida. Al-Masri says he was released in late May 2004.
