I would like to ask a general favor of everyone
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 01:45 PM by hyphenate
It's probably less needed here than in LBN, but I think this is a reasonable request, regardless.

Many people refer to Hillary Clinton as just "Hillary" which is fine, since we all pretty much know who we're talking about. But many newspaper/news articles just use "Clinton" and when they are posted, it's often difficult to discover whether they are talking about Bill or Hillary.

If people could just stick in the first initial, probably in parentheses, of either "B" or "H" it would certainly help in knowing whether an article is about Bill or Hillary.

That's all I request. Thank you!

1. We often use first names here. Somehow for women politicians -
we like and try to use last names. Rice, Clinton, etc. As long as it is made clear in the article that it is Clinton and not President Clinton, I think that is fine.

2. Is anal retentive hyphenated?
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 01:49 PM by wixomblues
Sheesh. Context will always explain it as well. Or, look for key words. If they use the word President, probably "Bill". If they use the word "Senator", probably "Hilary".

4. Wow. Is snark necessary?
It was a polite request. Your comment is out of line.

8. I don't have time to go through
every single post in every single forum. I would like to read what former president Clinton is doing, but I am often not interested in what Senator Clinton is doing at any given time. Sometimes, it is difficult to scan threads with that in mind, and I might miss something I really want to know about.

I don't think it's a silly request, but then, you and I have different reasons for reading at DU, and that's okay, too. Just don't assume something is "silly" because it's not something that interests you in particular.

Thank you.

6. I've been a little lost before. Sometimes not enough context to allow
a comfortable inference....

10. That's a good idea
I would also suggest that you could say Pres. Clinton or simply Bill in the body of your post so you could tell when you are talking about Bill Clinton.

12. What ever happened to the days of JFK, LBJ?
It would've been nice to have seen RMN though the best would've been HHH. I will admit when I'm reading a headline and see the word "Clinton" I often do not know -- based on the HEADLINE -- who is being spoken of. Obviously, one has sense enough to figure it out within the first sentence. But if it's just a headline, sometimes it CAN be confusing.

14. Ugh, Bill Clinton would variously be referred to as
BC, WJC, or WC. Any of those initials are subject to different interpretations, especially WC.

16. This is part of why I'm making the request
When I'm going trough a forum, it's the headline--thread title--which I see first. If I just see "Clinton" I have to check out the article, and it's annoying when it's just another Hillary article. It wastes my time, and I don't have a whole lot of extra time to be checking out threads that I don't want to read. The computer is often slow enough to annoy the crap out of me at those times when I'm trying to look for articles I am interested in.
