9/11 footage showing Muslims dancing in streets was FAKE!
How do I know this? Simple: when the attacks occured, it was nighttime in that part of the world, the footage they showed was in the daytime. The media just took footage of some other time they were celebrating and aired it that day. It was just RW media propaganda to turn Americans against Muslims.

2. I heard that
there were maybe a handful of people who appeared to celebrate. They were, if memory serves, Palistinians. That one tiny clip was run again and again on the news. The majority of people in the Middle East felt horrible about it, and feared what the US might do.

5. Indeed, it was a clip of a few Palestinians who where "celebrating"
I remember that there was this woman who was doing some kind of thing with her tongue. They replayed the same clip over and over again. IMO, those few who were "celebrating" didn't even really know what happened in NY.

14. When they found out,
the handful that had cheered fell silent.

At the time, there was a website showing memorials around the world for the 9/11 victims. One of the most touching was the one in East Jerusalem, yes the Palestinian Arab section, a memorial with candles and flowers and signs voicing sorrow.

You didn't find that on the right wing, corporate news, either.

Bush sure squandered all that sympathy in record time, didn't he?

Some of the footage was from something else.

Also some people were bribed to celebrate.

Let us not forget that White Supremacists also celebrated and 'christian' Right Preachers used 9/11 as a soapbox, but that is something that the 'liberal' media does not report on.

The attacks happened between 8 and 9 am and were reported live.

Most of the dancing footage was said to be footage of Palestinians in Israel, which is 7 hours ahead of Eastern time.

That means it was 3 or 4 pm... still daylight.

Would have been 4 in the afternoon there when the attacks took place....still daylight.
I swear...is there a concerted effort to try and re-write every aspect of that day from 4 years out?
I'm quite sure there were more that a few people in the Middle east celebrating that morning that needed no encouragement....money or otherwise. (what, the 5% that is considered the most radical = 2-5 Million globally)

12. It was Reuters film and Reuters says it was filmed Sept 11 in
East Jerusalem:

Reuters rejects as utterly baseless an allegation being circulated by e-mail and the Internet claiming that it circulated 10-year-old videotape to illustrate Palestinians celebrating in the wake of the September 11 tragedies in the United States.

Reuters welcomes a statement by the Universidad Estatal de Campinas-Brasil (UNICAMP), one of whose students was the author of the original e-mail, setting the record straight.

The videotape in question was shot in East Jerusalem by a Reuters camera crew on September 11 in the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the United States. The footage was broadcast by CNN and other subscribers to the Reuters video news service.

30. Except Reuters wasn't the only media on the ground in the Middle East
reporting or photographing such events. So they were all lying and faking? You really cannot believe that there were no overt demonstrations of schadenfreude over Sept 11 in the Middle East? It had to be manufactured or faked? Because the US was so popular there (as well as other places in the world), all would be in mourning because of Sept 11?

And the Committee to Protect Journalists protested the Palestinian Authority's interference with media trying to cover such events because none of it happened? http://www.cpj.org/protests/01ltrs/Palestine17sep01pl.h...

And lastly this 2001 statement by Hanan Mikhail-Ashrawi, longtime Palestinian spokesperson:

Mikhail-Ashrawi said she was happy to have the opportunity to comment on the widely shown film of Palestinians celebrating the Sept. 11 attacks. "Right after the tragedy, there were Palestinians who did react like that, without knowing the full extent of the attack. They were wounded, bruised, traumatized -- their initial reaction was, 'Maybe now they understand our situation.' I don't condone this, but they were a very distinct minority. That incident was used to express the whole Palestinian people. I know many more people who participated in candlelight vigils, who wanted to give blood." She said that she asked one news crew why they didn't show pictures reflecting the attitude of the majority of Palestinians: "I was told it wasn't dramatic or newsworthy. It distorts our humanity. Unfortunately, this isn't new. We have always been perceived through the eyes of others. We have to get beyond that." http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2001/11/06/ashrawi/pr...

13. I don't know about that, but I do know Bush faked soldiers' pictures
in some shots of him "addressing the troops". The deception was found, proved, and pointed out on the net during the 2004 election.

They had greatly enhanced the numbers of people in the audience by repeating sections of the crowd over and over in the doctored photos.

27. Internet Myth
One correction, it was Palestinians that were shown dancing, not muslims. Some if not a majority of them may have been muslim, but that is not something which can be determined from a videotape.

Just a quick search turned up this - a history of how the rumor was started:

CNN Used Old Footage From the Gulf War and Made It Appear as Though Palestinians Were Rejoicing Over the Terrorist Attacks On the U.S.-Fiction!

bullet Summary of the eRumor
An email from a Brazilian student has been circulating on the Internet at lightening speed. It alleges that CNN used Gulf War footage from 1991, saying that it was actually showing Palestinians rejoicing in the streets over the terrorists attacks on the United States in September, 2001.
bullet The Truth
It is not true. CNN has officially denied the claim. Also, the person who originated the email has now said that his information was wrong and he no longer believes the story.

It is true that there were Palestinians dancing in the streets and celebrating the terrorist attacks. A spokesperson for CNN told TruthOrFiction.com that the footage they used was authentic and was taken shortly after the terrorist attacks.

It is regarded as unethical among reputable news organizations to use film or video from one event and represent it as being from another event. When footage is used from a time or place other than what is being reported, it is customary to indicate that for the viewer. If it had been proven that CNN used 10-year-old pictures as though they were current, it would have been a major embarrassment.

The eRumor got its start from a university student in Brazil. He said that a teacher of his had videotapes from 1991 that proved that CNN had mislead its viewers and had complained to CNN and other news organizations about it. The student was deluged with requests about the teacher's claims so he contacted her outside of class about it and he says she denied having any videotapes. She is quoted as having said only that she remembers seeing the footage in 1991, even though she told the class differently.
A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:
---------------------------------------------------There's an important point in the power of press, specifically the power of CNN.

All around the world we are subjected to 3 or 4 huge news distributors and one of them - as you well know - is CNN.

Very well, I guess all of you have been seeing (just as I've been) images from this company. In particular, one set of images called my attencion: the Palestinians celebrating the bombing, out on the streets, eating some cake and making funny faces for the camera.

Well, THOSE IMAGES WERE SHOT BACK IN 1991!!! Those are images of Palestinians celebrating the invasion of Kuwait! It's simply unacceptable that a super-power of cumminications as CNN uses images which do not correspond to the reality in talking about so serious an issue.

A teacher of mine, here in Brazil, has videotapes recorded in 1991, with the very same images; he's been sending emails to CNN, Globo (the major TV network in Brazil) and newspapers, denouncing what I myself classify as a crime against the public opinion. If anyone of you has access to this kind of files, serch for it. In the meanwhile, I'll try to 'put my hands' on a copy of this tape. But now, think for a moment about the impact of such images. Your people is hurt, emotionally fragile, and this kind broadcast have very high possibility of causing waves of anger and rage against Palestinians. It's simply irresponsible to show images such as those.

Mrcio A. V. Carvalho State University of Campinas - Brazil ------------------------------ http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/cnnpalestinianvi...

Another link talking about how AP reporter was threatened if he released the videotape he shot showing celebrations that day -

Dated: Sept 16. 2001
Thousands of Palestinians again celebrate attacks, videotape suppressed

On Friday and Saturday, thousands of Palestinians again paraded through cities in the West Bank and Gaza, celebrating the attacks on the United States. Some Palestinian policeman reportedly joined the celebrations, while other Palestinian security officials confiscated videotape shot by journalists at the rally.

International news agencies continue to refrain from broadcasting video footage showing Palestinians, including members of Palestinian security forces, celebrating after this week's terrorist attacks in the United States due to severe threats and warnings issued by Palestinian Authority officials and representatives.

The Associated Press (AP) filed an official complaint with the Palestinian Authority after a freelance cameraman who filmed Palestinians celebrating the terror was threatened.

According to the AP, a videographer on assignment for Associated Press Television News, was "summoned to a Palestinian Authority security office and told that the material must not be aired." Tanzim militia members reportedly called and warned the freelancer that he would be held responsible if the footage was shown and made what he interpreted as threats on his life.

33. I recall reading a Snopes article which debunked the rumor
Some claimed at the time is was old footage of Palestinians cheering the invasion of Kuwait, others claimed different things...While certainly it wouldn't be hard to believe it was fake, it wouldn't be hard to believe if it was real either.

The fact is, that the US is hated around the world and yes, these are some people that have likely led hard lives, possibly losing family members to US made weapons.

So, yes it wouldn't be a stretch to believe some cheereed. It's unfortunate someone could cheer death and it's disgusting behavior...

But it's also worth noting that regardless what a minority did, a majority did feel shock and even expressed sympathy with the victims. There were memorials and vigils in many Muslim countries (I recall some large ones in Tehran among other places).

37. I wish I still had the link but the *full version* of this clip was shown
on the website of a German TV station.

It starts with the familiar five or six people "celebrating" and then pulls back to reveal the full view, showing that these five or six people are "celebrating" in isolation while hundreds of people walk past them on the street.

Whatever the source of the clip, the fact that it was played repeatedly on U.S. TV, with the unspoken implication that the whole Arab world was rejoicing over 9/11, is an example of crude but effective war-fomenting propaganda.
