I feel sooo for those kids, and I feel bad for the husband, too. Hell, I even feel bad for Margare, she's obviously very, very sick and completely miserable.

my husband turned on the tv to get the weather and started surfing. He stopped at one of the wife-trading shows for a few minutes, and we sat watching in bemused horror for a few minutes. The two families were each in their own ways messed up. The first woman was a preacher's wife from upstate New York who liked to hunt and fish (nothing wrong with that) and play football with her husband and several sons. She had no clue how to treat her young niece who had just come to live with the family (no explanation given for reason that we saw) who wanted to be a girl and lamented that her aunt didn't do girly stuff with her. Wife 1 indicated that she loved the Lord, her husband and her family in that order. One of the things she and her preacher husband did to punish their kids for misbehaving was to wash their mouths out with soap.

Wife 2 was from suburban Atlanta if memory serves. She and her husband were atheists - he runs a web-based program on atheism. She is the next best thing to an agoraphobic. Their house has a yard, but she is afraid to go out in it, so she and the children stay in the house most of the time, except when she drives them to daycare so she can play computer games like Sim Family. The household chores are handled by one of their young sons. He looked to be about 12. It was sad - we turned the tv off in the middle of this young boy's interview. He said that his father was a perfectionist and everything had to be done just right.

A couple of the clips run in between the introductions seemed to indicate that sparks were going to fly over the deep divide in religious beliefs. Having watched the clip with Ms. Perrin having her breakdown on DU a few weeks ago, we elected to watch the History Channel do yet another program on World War II. At least there, we knew the outcome.

Sad really that prodding people whose mental health is fragile into situations where they fall apart is considered entertaining. Sometimes recently I think we haven't come that far from when viewing the inmates in Saint Mary's of Bethlehem Hospital for the insane was considered fun and educational.

I thought it was hysterically funny until I saw those two younger girls, especially the youngest, being subjected to that. It hit too close to home. I hope it was all just "reality" t.v. acting, because I used to be that little girl, and it fucks you up for years.
