I told the young man who took the call that we have to hold ourselves out as a humane society, and that means, for one, not executing people who've rehabilitated themselves.

32. Most thoughtful reasons against the death penalty I've read.
I've always been ambivalent about it. But, now it seems barbaric and wastefully vengeful. Lately I've thought that we can't always be certain that a person is actually guilty, that with our imperfect system of justice we should err of the side of mercy.

I can imagine conditions where execution may be the better choice, but it should be done with regret to protect others and not as revenge, punishment, or that quite lame rationale ...deterrence.
