Miami Univeristy of Ohio being sued over same-sex...
policy providing benefits for so-called "same-sex domestic partners." State Representative Tom Brinkman has filed suit against the school's benefits program, claiming it violates a 2004 Ohio constitutional amendment banning homosexual marriage.

Being a miami student i find this pretty sad.

1. Oh come on!
Find something else to occupy your time, Rep. Brinkman! Why are you getting into this? Does it help anyone? Why do this s**t that makes it seem like you're working? Why not actually work and help people? You could help lots of people without playing "Marriage Policeman" and filing stupid lawsuits.

Years from now, we'll be looking at behavior like this and laughing our heads off.

2. I thought seperate BUT equal?
how is not providing similar benefits packages equal? Because if they want to get into a bigger civil rights battle than they already are, they can go for seperate and unequal if they want. The ACLU might have some fun at their expense however.

I hope for your sake (and that of your university) that people come to their senses. Wouldn't want the home of Wally Sczerbiak (is that how you spell it?) to be defiled like that :D

7. the benefits packages are equal
the same-sex domestic partners get the same benefits as the 'traditional' partners do.

8. The benefits are not taxed equally however.
But that's another issue.

11. Well, right now they are equal (other than the tax thing)
but Brinkman wants them unequal, which would be disgusting. Oh yeah, and welcome to DU (as others have so graciously stated before me). :D

3. That is REALLY sad...
His argument about a "particular legal status" is not valid. Same-sex domestic partnership is NOT the same as marriage, as so many fundies and RWers love to point out. I guess Brinkman has nothing better to do than to pick on people who are just trying to live their own lives.

6. Is Brinkman stupid? It's not marriage benefits, it's domestic partnership

benefits!

Many universities offer them (whether they like it or not) so they can remain competitive in attracting faculty and staff.

Of course, they won't pay for my birth control prescription, but that's another matter entirely.
