"go ye unto the stores & buy many gifts in remembrance of me"
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 08:01 AM by mopaul
...from the book of walmart:

'go ye and cutteth down a pine tree in my name, and adorneth it with tinsel and garland, and in thy front yard inflateth thee a giant plastic snow globe"

'do this every year, and try to outdoeth it every year after and covet thy neighbor's gaudy decorations, taking the money that could have been used to feed the poor and render it unto ceasar"

"ignore the poor houses and the rescue missions as ye passeth them by on thy way to dillards and target, and droppeth thee a pittance into the salvation army bucket to ease thy guilty and greedy soul"

"do this in remembrance of me"

5. Nonsense
you are making repug argument that liberals wnat to kill christmas true

No, what the OP is doing here is highlighting the hypocrisy of the Rs. They scream bloody murder over semantics and public religious displays but contribute heavily to the mindset that Christmas is all about materialism.

If I were a Christian I'd be jumping in this thread to criticize those who so cheapen what is meant to be more than a shopping frenzy and that are so effectively targeted by the OP.

Cheers,
Julie

12. you keep making it a shopping frenzy. for many many
it is exactly not a shopping frenzy it is much much more. yet here i am once again expressing all..... it is much much more. defending ezactly how you want me to

no it is not a shopping frenzy, so though you cannot make it so for me, you dont have to see it that way, you just chose to see it as a frenzy. it is not what many are experiencing in christmas

so i guess i will have to support you in as a christian coming onto this thread to say, it is much more than what you are suggesting christmas is

8. I think Jesus
would be throwing over the tables in the temple again and probably in the malls too, if he saw the circus that we've turned the celebration of his birth into.

BTW: I was raised RC and went to 12 year of RC schools.

16. it is a time for family to have lite and color and joy
and can be honored in many ways, by many cultures. it is a gift to all people, if they chose. and their right to not particpate if they dont. it is cold and white and early nights. and fireplaces, and families, friends together in laughter an joy

make it however you want.

christian coilation, whatever they want.

but insist i will continue to make it the way i want.

my way isnt exclusive, it is not of religion, it is an honoring of what christs says,..... and that is easy enough. love

that is universal. if we chose

i have been syaing to the right, you do not get my christmas, and i say to those harping and the materialism, i had the same attitude for yours, and sounded as pompous. it is this way only if that is how you play in this holiday season.

or .... it can be lite love joy fun happiness grand cool........my kids get time off from school and i get to hang out with them
we get to think about others we love
we get to sit in pure beauty and peace
husband gets time off work

every person is in a jolly mood when i am out and about

it is what you make of it

i am not hung up on jesus as exclusive. jesus's words for me, is one, universal inclusive. i am not the one in battle here

15. Of course we are making the rethug argument true. Actually we are not:
The sheeple's inability or indolence to look up the truth on our history (Xmas wasn't even considered a holiday until 1836, and even then it was a state-by-state basis, and even then it wasn't about petty shopping!) makes them easy to fool. They are wilfully gullible; they are geniuses for being led.

celebrating it in a big fat jolly ole man that has fairy dust and can do the world, every child in one night. and eat all the cookies and drink all the milk

you think i am doing christmas in any kind of reality?
you think i care?

just as it is bullshit and the rights, "to do" of christmas can only be played out one way if you are a true christian. the taking over of christmas.... just the same as taking over the flag, which i love so. tis my flag too. as the taking over of america. my america too. bullshit. and the right and left a shooting bullets at one another, thinking how clever they both are, to see who can control this holiday

i dont give a fuck about that shit

and all the people i know dont care at all about that crap.

so this is your game, not mine.

falwell no more gets my christmas, than he does my jesus, or my christ conscious, or my flag, or my country

real reason for Christmas despite the fact they receive presents.

They seem to be OK to me. They have never been obsessively materialistic, despite the few gifts we purchase and they keep their eye on the real meaning of Christmas.

Today's celebration of Christmas does strike me as increasingly materialistic, but I am not going to allow my displeasure with crass commercialism with the real joy of celebrating Christmas -

Jesus' birth whatever day that was, and the eternal hope for peace and joy in everyone's heart.

9. Reminds me of the
pastor of a Baptist church in Raleigh, NC who used $11,000 of the church funds recently to buy a media blitz to encourage shoppers to patronize business' that use "Merry Christmas."

snip :

"We definitely don't want to offend anybody," said Fig's Market co-owner Jill Kucera. "We want everybody to celebrate the holiday that suits them and we want to be open to everybody."

"But Pastor Patrick Wooden believes being "open" closes the door on Christmas.

"The way I see it is retailers want to make Christmas money without acknowledging Christmas," Wooden said.

Critics argue the Upper Room Church should have spent the campaign's $11,000 on helping the poor, but Wooden said the money is well spent. He adds the church helps the poor locally every week and has also donated money to hurricane victims.

14. Stephanie Miller just ripped Bill O'Leilly to the same effect

Billie: "Every company in America should be down on its knees thanking Jesus from being born. They would be a lot less profitable."
Steph: "Yeah, I'm sure that's what Jesus had in mind."

21. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
1. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute heilige Paar.
Holder Knab' im lockigten Haar,
: Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! :

2. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.
: Jesus in deiner Geburt! :

3. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Die der Welt Heil gebracht,
Aus des Himmels goldenen Höhn,
Uns der Gnaden Fülle läßt sehn,
: Jesum in Menschengestalt! :

4. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Wo sich heut alle Macht
Väterlicher Liebe ergoß,
Und als Bruder huldvoll umschloß
: Jesus die Völker der Welt! :

5. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Lange schon uns bedacht,
Als der Herr vom Grimme befreit
In der Väter urgrauer Zeit
: Aller Welt Schonung verhieß! :

6. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Alleluja,
Tönt es laut bei Ferne und Nah:
: "Jesus der Retter ist da!" :

22. He never belonged there in the first place.
Seeing as it's a pagan holiday co-opted by Christian marketing specialists in the first century to help "sell" this Christian religion thing.

If we really wanted to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas we'd have some killer feasts and orgies decorated with golden idols.
