10. To steal from Stephanie Miller, "bright and beautiful" is really code for
"Operation 'Look over here.'"

See the shiny keys! Quick! Look over here! Oooooh, PRETTY!

5. Oh well. I guess "all things dull and ugly" would have offended
first Dubya and then Condoleezza.

7. "THE LORD GOD MADE THEM ALL"
That is how the hymn "All things bright and beautiful" ends.

Some previous themes.....

1998 Winter Wonderland
1997 Santa’s Workshop
1996 The Nutcracker
1995 ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
1994 The Twelve Days of Christmas

So, as you can see, the Nation is being reminded that Christmas is under ATTACK and the people's house theme must be straight out of a Christian hymnal. Just sayin'.

11. 1998 was a good year, kind of
I had an ornament on the White House tree that year that was even featured in the HGTV's special on the decorations. It's in a box in the Smithsonian somewhere. Of course, when they had the tours for the artists and artisans to see the decorations, Hillary was up at the Hill trying to talk Congress out of impeaching her husband, and Clinton was with his lawyers. *sigh*

That tree was ugly, though. They couldn't have fit more crap on that tree if they'd tried. TKGA had knitted hat and mitten sets, the Decorative Artists had sleds, and then every state got a 7" tall snowman: all of that would've been enough, but no, they had to add garlands, balls, huge lights, and more. You could barely see the tree. Ick. At least mine was at the end of the branch and could be seen.

I can't seem to find which groups are on the tree this year. I doubt that TKGA (the Knitting Guild Association) will be, as we made a stink in '98 about making hat and mitten sets that weren't going to be worn by anyone (rumor had had it that they'd be given to homeless children, but federal law says that all Christmas decorations in the White House have to be archived in the Smithsonian). I'll bet the Decorative Artists are, but I wonder who else is.
