New female icon for France: who would US choose for its own?
<Snip>

The ideal of French womanhood has taken a dramatic shift with the selection of an afternoon chat show host as the next Marianne, the embodiment of France whose bust stands in every town hall.Evelyne Thomas, 39, has been chosen by the mayors of France's 36,779 towns and villages to represent Marianne for the next four years, beating off competition from Sophie Marceau, the actress, and Carla Bruni, the model and singer.

She is both the oldest and the least glamorous Marianne to have been picked, following in the steps of Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and most recently the models Ines de la Fressange and Laetitia Casta.

The choice of Mme Thomas represents a profound change in what France admires in a woman, away from those beautiful but difficult actresses and models towards a more down to earth television host, whose daily show, "C'est mon choix" ("It's my choice"), deals with people's everyday crises.

The criteria for a good Marianne, according to the mayors, are that she be immediately recognisable, with a strong gaze, high cheekbones and "an original hairdo". She is also supposed to represent contemporary France while remaining true to the most memorable Marianne ever depicted.

4. Pickles vs. Hillary
And the country would hold an election using BBV and Pickles would win even though Hillary got more votes.

7. Zeta Jones Douglas is Welsh
Half, anyway. "Zeta" is not a Welsh name. But that sort of rules her out.

8. According to the late Dr Michael Wolf, 'Zeta' is part of the
name 'Zeta Reticuli' - a species name for extra terrestrial aliens said to be the 'Grey' beings that have infiltrated planet earth from the time of the Roswell UFO crash!

9. I would prefer strong character
to "fashionably correct" appearance!

Some that come to mind:

Granny D!

Whoopi

Eleanor Roosevelt

Bella Abzug

Toni Morrison

How about the woman in that sculpture on the south-facing pediment of the House:

"Peace Protecting Genius"

13. Not female, but perhaps a suitable icon
I'd suggest Mickey Mouse with a five o'clock shadow. He'd be wearing a shrunken "United We Stand" t-shirt that revealed a protruding gut.

In one hand, a beer and in the other, a TV remote control.

Seriously, I would pick Chelsea Clinton. She is a woman. She is smart, level headed and strong. She proved it during the impeachment.

18. Canada has one...
Laura Secord!!!
A hooker who helped defeat Americans!!!

The War of 1812, was a war between the British (Canadians) and the United States. It was this time period that permanently established the borders that run the length of both countries. The Americans were pushing into Upper Canada, and on June 21st, 1813 a group of soldiers took over the Secord home in Queenston, Upper Canada.

Laura's husband still recovering from the Battle of Queenston Heights, had limited mobility. She cooked, served and cleaned up after the intruders. She also gave them plenty to drink. As the evening wore on, the soldiers began to talk of their plans. Perhaps they did so because of the alcohol or perhaps they knew that James Secord was not a threat.

Laura overheard Colonel Boerstler's plan to surprise Lt. Fitzgibbon at Beaverdams. She knew that the Niagara peninsula would fall into the American's hands if the British were not warned of the impending invasion.

Although there is some conflict as to how she got there, the truth is that she did - by walking 20 miles (32 km).

By nightfall she was exhausted when confronted with Indians. She managed to convey the importance of her mission to the Chief, and he arranged for her to be escorted the remainder of the way.

As a result, all but 6 of the American soldiers were captured.

The Horseshoe Falls and the fertile soil of the Niagara Peninsula are still proudly, Canadian.

LOL...

21. Ah - Laura Secord!
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 11:37 AM by Minstrel Boy
Just seeing your post made my hair stand on end. Her story really chokes me up. Pity most Canadians know her name as a box of chocolates. She should be memorialized as our Paul Revere.

Think I'll take this opportunity to post the lyrics to Tanglefoot's wonderful folk song, "Secord's Warning":

Secord's Warning
written by: Joe Grant and Steve Ritchie

Come all you brave young soldier lads
With your strong and manly bearing
I'll tell you a tale of a woman bold and her deed of honest daring
Laura Secord was American-born in the state of Massachusets
But she made her home in Canada and proved so faithful to us

Chorus:
There's American guns and 500 men
So the warning must be given
And Laura Ingersoll Secord was the stalwart heart
Who braved the heat and the flies and the swamp
To warn Colonel Fitzgibbon

There's soldiers pounding at the door
And they come from across the border
American officers march inside
It's food and drink they've ordered
In comfort they have dined and drunk
Their own success they've toasted
But they pay no heed to the woman who hears their plan so idly boasted

Chorus

Oh, James I've overheard it all
A surprise attack they're making
Fitzgibbon they intend to smash
His men for prisoners taking
And James a warning never you'll take with your wounded knee and shoulder
I myself must carry it past the sentries and the soldiers

Chorus

It's an all-day tramp to the British camp
By way of Shipman's Corners
There're snakes and flies and sweat in her eyes
There is no respite for her
She's lost her shoes in the muck of the bog
Her feet are torn and blistered
But there's many a soldier lad to be spared if the message be delivered

Chorus

So all you Yankee soldier lads who dare to cross our border
Thinking to save us from ourselves
Usurping British order
There's women and men Canadians all
Of every rank and station
To stand on guard and keep us free
From Yankee domination!

Chorus

19. For Imperial Bushevik Amerika: Ann Coulter or Ilse Koch
I know Ilse wasn't American, but she was one of the millions who benefotted from Grandpa Prescott Bush's Money Laundering Operation for her Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, during DubyaDubyaTwo.

I have no doubt that of the many Jews she helped kill, more than a few of the family heirlooms and gold teeth were laundered into fresh American Greenbacks by Prescott Bush.

Based on this tenuous connection, either Coulter or Koch are PERFECT CoverGirls for Bushevik-Occupied Imperial Amerika.
