How would you compare Mccarthur to the chimp?

I am readding a book about Mccarthyism right now and it's pretty scarey. Thankfully I missed that awful time. However for those of you that had lived thru those bleak years can you school me on how it insane it was? Was it worse than living with the chimps current band of theocrats? Note this is not for a book report or anything just for my personal knowlege. And I simply dont know that many people outside of DU to ask this question. Thank you all Danny.

2. I wasn't a sentient

being during the McCarthy era, either, but I am aware that it had long-term effects in many areas. For example, there were many faculty at a large university in the NW who were at odds with each other at least 10-15 years later. I met one person whose dad had been a professor there during the "era" and the entire family had been ostracized.
Of course, there were also huge battles among actors, and again, people were so polarized and said such horrible things about each other that the rifts continued probably to the ends of those actors lives.
