Dogs and cats for fur: Paul McCartney vows never to perform in China.
Edited on Sun Nov-27-05 09:11 PM by Karmadillo
Article is well worth reading.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4476664.stm

Sir Paul McCartney has vowed never to perform in China after seeing horrific undercover footage of dogs and cats being killed for their fur.

The former Beatle also said he would boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics after viewing the footage taken in a fur market in Guangzhou, southern China.

The film shows animals being thrown from a bus, and into boiling water.

A Chinese official said boycotts were not justified, and blamed US and European consumers for buying the fur.

<edit>

The screaming animals, many with their paws now smashed from the fall, are then lifted out with long metal tongs and thrown over a seven foot fence.

Some are senselessly beaten by laughing and smiling workers.

All are then killed and skinned for their fur - many are believed still to be alive as their skins are peeled away.

I knew more than 20 years ago when in a hotel gift shop in Shanghai. Asked about a fur coat in a glassed-in display case...the shop assistant said it was dog. I damn near puked.

On edit: Dogs and cats are also sold in markets in China...as meat for dinner.

9. Oh, I know
since dog and cat fur is barbaric. Isn't killing other animals just for their skin barbaric as well?

10. I am against fur, as there are suitable faux materials...
and unless you live in extremely severe weather where you HAVE to wear some type of fur, then I'm totally against it. I'm against a cruel industry that is serving as nothing but a status symbol. It's like the whole crocodile or ivory issue.

8. Speaking of that... fuck J.Crew!!! (coyote fur hoodie for xmas?)
Just saw that their catalog features a $200.00 COYOTE fur hoodie! yeah.. that's pretty fucking useful, coyote fur around the hood. Seems that most coyote fur is imported AND it's DOGS, not coyotes. You have to be a sick person to order that... I have sent J.Crew a scathing email about their latest foray into fur products, and let them know that I"d be spreading the word.

Now many stores are selling unnamed "fur" products, which are apparently dogs and cats from China, dyed to look like leopard. Disgusting.

I couldn't find the hoodie in J.Crew's website, tho it's featured prominently in their latest catalog which arrived yesterday. If you EVER have shopped at J.Crew, or ever plan to again, I suggest you contact them to tell them how you feel about their imported COYOTE fur.

12. Lots of women's apres ski boots (mens too, I imagine)
Edited on Sun Nov-27-05 10:17 PM by hlthe2b
are dog fur (and have been for decades)
Check this website: (simple google search for fur sorel boots)
http://ecom1.sno-ski.net/footwear.html

Goat, rabbit, calfskin and (likely dog) fur, mink..

It is bad enough what we ignore (in terms of animal cruelty) to put food in our bellies, but for the sake of vanity? I'm among those who is dearly tempted to spit on fur-wearing wealthy asses. I'm with PETA on this one....

13. Thanks for posting
I never knew that dogs and cats were killed for their fur. I won't wear any fur. I think all fur belongs on it's rightful owner (the animal). I can't believe that it's brought into this country. The media should be told and maybe public outrage would end it. Therefore if China's sales dropped they would stop with that barbaric practice. On another note people should stop wearing all fur.

I really didn't need to read that. I feel that there is nothing I can do to help. I already don't wear furs and eat animals.

I hate this shit.

18. I don't think there's much demand. When used, it's apparently passed off
as coming from a more "acceptable" fur source.

21. Have you seen any of the cute sweaters with fur collars?
You'll also see unnamed fur on gloves, scarves, etc. These are not expensive items. Fur is back as a popular trim.

Since you're a guy, I guess you may not be up on the trends. (I know the trends but only wear what suits me.)

I live in Houston, where fur is NOT needed. Fur-bearing ladies here are usually on their second husband, second facelift & first boob job.

Even though I won't wear any fur, the thought of cat & dog fur squicks me out. Guess I'm a species-ist.

19. They also eat them. As a vegetarian, I'd think he'd object to this even
more. My parents visited China and they had had dogs for sale in the marketplace, though the cages were empty, by the time they got there. :puke:

Kudos to Sir Paul!:toast:

20. Good for Paul. I'm not a fan, but I admire his principles.
I'm not even going to say what I think of the Chinese about this, since it is very un-PC.
