bushgang to cut $500 mil from Calif. fire fighters - oh yes

Proposed cutback would ground firefighting fleet
Slashing of $500 million reserve fund is largest trim in president's budget plan

-snip-

The White House has pitched eliminating a $500 million reserve fund that is tapped to battle blazes across California and the rest of the nation during heavy fire years. The $700 million annual firefighting budget is often exceeded, with costs rising to more than $1 billion.

-snip-

The proposal is the largest aspect of a proposed $2.3 billion package of cuts across U.S. government agencies.

If combined with a related development — a proposed spending limit of $100 million next year on federal aerial firefighting — it will cut the agency's airborne efforts by 50 percent to 75 percent.

-snip-

The requirement "will effectively shut down the Forest Service's aviation program in fiscal year 2006, with the exception of some limited use of air tankers late in the fiscal year," according to the memo.

16. Let's try to remember that it's often FEDERAL forests and lands that burn.
Rather than spin this as a state's issue, it really is a federal forest issue even more so. That state resources (and monies) are employed in fighting fires on federal lands with their borders might be an interesting analysis in expense distribution.

3. wow.
just wow.

I don't see how this can go ahead though - especially after the tremendous success of the firefighters in the recent Topanga fire. California LOVES the fire crews.

Healthy forests indeed...

6. George needs it more than they do and
since he's already cutting the trees down, why not let some of them burn? Just another way of clearing the back 40 acres.

12. It's okay. The mansions of the rich are insured.
They won't mind when their homes burn down, will they? After all, they have their tax cuts and they can build again.

Unlike New Orleans, where the poor lived in the most dangerous areas, in California, the rich build multimillion dollar homes by the sea, on the cliffs, at the faultlines.

Can't wait to hear the howling when there is no one to stop those vast houses from being consumed.

19. Exactly
I wonder if the good people of east county San Diego still have the cedar fire fresh in their minds. I know I sure in the hell will never forget it. Watching the flames come down the mountain one way as your trying to flee with your family and pictures the opposite way is no joke. I have never been so terrified in my whole life. I'm sure the folks of east county San Diego are scared too but they overwhelmingly voted for the chimp because they thought he wold keep them safe. Oh well, like you said those million dollar homes up in the mountains are insured to the hilt. It will be the little people who will get screwed by the insurance companies.
