I wanted to nominate Victor Callahan, a MO state senator who voluntarily gave up his own health insurance so he could draw attention to the thousands of people in the state who have no insurance.

5. Damn, that's awesome
Reminds me of the recent story about actress Charlize Theron and her partner, who have decided that they won't marry until gays can.

10. My principal moves her desk into the hall
every August and works there in the heat to show solidarity with the rest of us who have no air conditioning in our rooms. She's a great boss.

John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee, The ENTIRE Black Caucus, Russ Holt, Dave Obey, Dick Durbin, Barack Obama, George Clooney, Rachel Maddow and Dennis Kucinich. Al Franken (a tad too moderate for my taste, but he has done wonders for the cause).

AIR AMERICA RADIO ....can a radio station be a hero? :shrug:

There's 20+ :) I'm sure there's many more, but my brain isn't cooperating. ;)

14. Not a bad idea. How about this last week's Reality-based Heros?
The pretzel hasn't done anything lately, and that door in China was a commie operative. How about...

1. Bob Graham. Spilled some of the beans in the Washington Post...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/18/AR2005111802397.html

2. Daniel Ellsberg, arrested once again, this time in Crawford, could very well be in the top ten of my lifetime.

3. Jeff Seeman's stunt as a faux-homeless man, while a stunt, nevertheless probably enlightened some folks, and actually turned out to be comically and not-so-comically realistic, thus qualifying I guess as not really a stunt after all...

4. The ACLU took up the Denver Three case...

http://rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_4255652,00.html

5. The House Democratic Caucus. They maintained quite a bit of disciplined and did some funky judo in defeating the republican plan for a disorganized and unmeasured withdrawal from Iraq, thus allowing the GOP to triangulate itself. Neat. Not Harriet Miers neat, but still neat.

I guess that kind of comes close. Of course, that's Buzzflash's, not DU's, and it's already a counterpoint to the GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

18. Until the Dems are willing to take on the voting machines openly,
they're idiots too in my estimation. The evidence is out there, and all it would take would be for one really prominent name to take up the cause and the rest of the Dem idiots might have a light go on in their brain and do something to insure a fair vote in 06.

I'm hopin and a prayin, but I'm not too optimistic.

20. Obama has great potential
But other than that, what has he really done yet?

Btw, I saw him speak in person, and he had middle-aged white men in tears of wonder and joy -- absolutely amazing. "Impressed" doesn't even begin to cover my feelings after that speech; the man has both a gift and a vision. If someone doesn't shoot him first, he WILL be the first black president.

21. My top few
Al Gore, who championed the rights of the average person to the extent no other politician has been willing to do so, for conceiving truly innovative ideas to clean up our environment and make our literal lives healthier to live, for 25 years of true public service, during which he actually did things to better our existence, such as taking the initiative to champion giving the primitive Internet to the people and helping channel it into the Internet we know today, FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST A PREEMPTIVE ATTACK ON IRAQ WHEN ONLY A HANDFUL OF OTHER DEMOCRATS WOULD DO SO, BUT MOST OF ALL FOR THE HEROIC RESCUE OF NEW ORLEANS RESIDENTS IN THE AFTERMATH OF KATRINA;

Former President Carter for breaking with tradition and criticizing a sitting president's (sic) foreign affairs policy by writing an op-ed piece in The New York Times claiming the preemptive attack on Iraq was simply wrong. Kudos to Carter, a true statesman, who broke with tradition in the name of common decency to try to stop an illegal, immoral war;

Senator Byrd for decrying the war and trying to institute a debate before Bush* marched off to war;

Richard Clarke, whose book Against All Enemies, cost him his livelihood and made him a target of the Bush* political retaliation cabal, because speaking the truth to the public was more important to him than a buck -- a true rarity in today's Washington, D.C. and a commodity which will ensure his place in history;

Patrick Fitzgerald, the dragon slayer on the Federal prosecution team who will lead us to the truth of the Plame Affair;

Joseph Wilson, another hero, who stood up to Bush* and his lies, knowingly but willingly making himself a target to speak out against a crime against both his wife and this Country;

Justice Stevens, a Republican Supreme Court judge, who put aside his political philosophy and wrote the dissent in Bush* v. Gore, which dissent will live in both legal and civic history for longer than we can even speculate -- a true statesman who in simply respecting both the law and the truth set a bar so high few in his legal community could even dare dream of scaling it.

These are my true political and civic heroes. Their acts and deeds I feel have paved the way for others to follow in their footsteps and speak out against the threats this Country faces today, and for the raw courage they have demonstrated in doing so, I truly admire them.

22. Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 10:49 PM by prescole
Daniel Patrick Moynihan (can't say that enough)
Martin Luther King
Jimmy Carter
John F. Kennedy
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Bob Dylan (at least I think he's liberal...so hard to understand the words)
Al Franken (carrying the mantle now)
Michael Moore
Bill Clinton
Gloria Steinham

Great idea, btw

I'd add a few conservative heroes (takes two wings to fly,) based on their works and their opposition to the Bush cabal:
Pat Buchanan (please don't flame me, he's been anti-Iraq war from the start and puts the war in historical perspective nicely)
William F. Buckley (coulda sat back and kept silent)
George Will (the man's brilliant)
Senator Hagel (on Iraq)
Senator McCain (torture)

23. I agree with almost all of those named, but I'd add
Tom Daschle - He was the mastermind behind that closed-door Senate session.

Jon Stewart - Did anyone mention him?

All the churches and religious organizations that actually FOLLOW the teachings of Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Lao Tse, and other great prophets instead of distorting them for their own perverse ends.

Elizabeth Edwards

Bono

Oprah Winfrey - I know she's not overly political, but when she is, she's dynamite.

Mayor Gavin Newsome of San Francisco

I'm sure I will think of more later.
