Anthrax Redux: four years gone
Remember the post-9/11 anthrax attacks? Curiously, Democratic Senators Tom Daschle and Pat Leahy along with certain media personalities were targeted. What ever happened to the investigation? It is basically in the Cold Case file, after being "centralized" by John Ashcroft.

In the three years since, scant progress has been reported. In 2003, a pond in Maryland was drained and searched, but no anthrax was found. In 2004, a doctor's home was searched, but nothing came of it. There have been no arrests or indictments. In September, the Washington Post reported that the investigation, dubbed "Amerithrax," has actually been downsized. Investigators are now busy compiling a report summarizing their efforts. As the months pass, one might conclude that an investigation of vital national significance is adrift, or worse, relegated to the cold case file.

<snip>

But it seems that the anthrax investigation has never recovered from its early missteps. This is partly because then-Attorney General John Ashcroft openly targeted Hatfill as a "person of interest," signaling early on that politicians were in charge. Valuable investigative resources had to be committed to meet expectations, regardless of whether it made sense. Opportunities were undoubtedly lost as a result. Stung by the ensuing criticism, the government retreated into a defensive posture. Unlike the Unabom investigation, where field agents were able to retain some measure of control, the anthrax investigation has become more centralized; investigators receive assignments and compile reports for their superiors in Washington. A subtle shift from proactive investigation to damage control has taken place.

So as we watch the progress of Hatfill's effort to restore his reputation, we should use the unfolding of Hatfill v. The New York Times as an opportunity to renew the public debate about the anthrax investigation, including the proper role of the press. We should ask our government what it is doing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this horrific and unsolved act. We might ask how we can be expected to fight a war on terror if we have not yet identified all our enemies.

Let us just hope we will not have to wait to see what information comes out of the defamation lawsuit to get some answers. Or shall we rely on Hatfill's lawyers to do our government's work for us?

Absolutely no progress in investigation of post-911 attacks, but lots of "terrorist WMD" hysteria.

5. It was the repugs...
Why would the terrorist be sending it to Democratic senators when repugs in power? Why would they be sending it to Tom brokaw? They had others planned to make it look good. As soon as I saw that letter on tv, started looking at the repugs smirking faces, they are so hateful this was their time to strike anything to make them look like they are strong and Bush is a strong leader :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Of all of the things we have seen them do, I have never trusted them since Newt gin-grinch and Lee Atwater I have been watching them every since. For the people here who really believe that these people are playing games, you need to open your eyes these are some really evil bastards!

6. I think this is possible
but history will conclude it's more than anthrax. That's why I wrote it was "curious."

I think there is a war going on inside the Government, one side wants some semblence of a Republic, like Richard Clarke, and the other side - the Bush-Cheney cabal, aided by neo-cons like Irving and William Kristol, David Brooks, Tom Friedman, John and Norman Podhoretz, Martin Peretz, David Horowitz , Paul Wolfkowitz et al. - wants a fascist empire. This is the greatest untold story of this Administration.

8. Also amazing that those Senators offices were closed down for a few months
while decontamination people had complete access. Access to all the Democrat's computers and other files....Remember nothing could be removed and no one was allowed to come close..

12. The anthrax attacks on Dems were a WARNING.
A warning to not look too closely behind the curtain in regards to the TRUTH behind the PNAC's much longed for "New Pearl Harbor"...

14. Judicial Watch Article
"In October 2001, press reports revealed that White House staff had been on a regimen of the powerful antibiotic Cipro since the September 11th terrorist attacks. Judicial Watch is aggressively pursuing the disclosure of the facts and the decision for White House staff, and President Bush as well, to begin taking Cipro nearly a month before anthrax was detected on Capitol Hill."

17. Dr. Philip Zack
was supposedly caught on security cameras entering/exiting the place where anthrax was stored (Ft. Detrick). Zack was angry b/c he'd been reprimanded for his behavior in a disagreement with a colleague of Egyptian descent. Zack's behavior in that matter was very unethical.

18. I think they (administration neocons) were planning to hang the anthrax
attacks on Saddam Hussein. They met with a major glitch in this plan, however, when it was revealed to the public that the anthrax was Ames strain anthrax from Fort Detrick, U.S.A.
