Poll question: Is Harry Potter a Christian movie?
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 11:10 AM by neuvocat
Ok: The movie called "The Chronicles of Narnia"-otherwise known as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe-involves 3 children who discover a hidden land accessed through a portal that one could only find through an armoire. They are befriended by a heroic lion on a series of adventures while confronting a witch as their nemesis.

For reasons still unknown to me, many churches are hoping that this movie will spark some sort of revival, so I decided to put this tongue-in-cheek poll up. I mean, if this is what constitutes a "Christian" movie, then what's to say that Harry Potter isn't a stalwart of good moral and Christian values either (or for that matter, "The Wizard of Oz?")

2. Interesting poll
I would think that the Harry Potter books teach moral principles that some Christians are comfortable with; I enjoy them myself.

Other christians, not understanding the difference between fantasy and reality, would condemn them as invitations to witchcraft.

4. Name 20 movies put out by major studios that could truly be called
"Christian" movies. Absurd issue.

And frankly who gives a rat's ass if it's "Christian" or not.

6. Who cares. It's FICTION.
If the bible bangers (who make dopeheads seem intelligent by comparison) can't fathom fiction from reality, then don't expect me to bother wasting their time with their point of view. They're way past reality.

7. I just talked to a fundie at work, heh...
her kids aren't allowed to watch or read Harry Potter because there is "witchcraft".

But they're all excited about Narnia.

I asked her who the villian is...what she does in Narnia.

Fundie lady suddenly got very quiet and said "I don't know it's just a kids movie".

I let it stand there. I'll have to revisit the question with her in a couple weeks. Very politely and with care for her children of course.

8. Here's why: C.S.Lewis wasn't just a Christian
he was a Christian scholar who wrote many works examining the nature and history of Christianity. The kids books were an entertaining departure for him, and they allowed him to work out some scenarios about Christianity that ultimately caused the pope to rebuke him. Lewis believed the ordinary version of Christianity we are all exposed to was incorrect in many ways, especially in regard to the role of women in the church in his view of Christianity weomen were just as important as men, in making decisions etc.

We're hoping the fundies will go to Narnia and discover, through the persuasion of fiction, that their religion is not the tight, abusive and hypocritical thing it has become, but has a more basic appeal to the hearts of everyone and a clearer view of what is good and what is evil.

It seems that even the nicest people you know and love can also be used as the tool of evil. Even W, maybe!

You'll see--the Dobsons and LaHayes will eventually condemn the movie. It talks about real Christianity and real freedom, something they DON'T want!

9. Harry Potter
Someone wrote an article about how the Harry Potter books have a Catholic perspective & the "Left Behind" books have a Protestant perspective.
