Will Bush's Tax Cuts Be Offset by Funding Cuts and/or Increases in Taxes?
With many states supposedly facing huge budget problems, will the effects of the Bush tax cuts be offset by cuts in funding and/or increases in taxes at the state level?

1. They already are in some states
It's only natural. It's not a great strategy though, because then it makes the governors the badguys, and that's probably where the next generation of Conservative presidents will come from.

2. Both
Spending cuts at the Federal level, tax increases at the State and Local levels with a few taxes disguised as fees to make them easier for the average guy to take.

I's going to be a huge mess for quite a while.

3. Can't do everything...
Spending cuts at the Federal level, tax increases at the State and Local levels with a few taxes disguised as fees to make them easier for the average guy to take.

It's certainly going to make people think about their local priorities. A new road or a battered women's shelter? A new courthouse of low-income housing? I'm afraid the choices will be made on the basis of how many of the general public benefits and what things are the most visible.

4. That "strategy"....
Will make it 1) Harder for Dub in normally-easily-winnable states next year; 2) Harder for Jeb boy to claim the prize in 2008, and 3)Harder for other Repubs to claim any success for the Supply-Side fiasco.

The "No more unfunded Federal mandates!" pledge in the Contract On America has been junked by Dub & Co., along with the "term limits" pledges of assorted right-wing GOP "CongressNewties". Eventually, Dub WOULD have to raise taxes in other areas, or make draconian, Grover-Norquist-style budget cuts and eliminations, were he to be elected next year. Put it this way: he WON'T be returning Jeb-boy any favors for discarding those hanging chads when Jeb runs to continue the dynasty in 2008.:eyes:

5. Of course.
States can't borrow as easily as as the Fed, so most are already in trouble.

As usual, Shrub will attempt to find some money to bribe states he finds politically important. All Presidents do, and his recent discussions with Ah-nuld will undoubtedly help reduce the Golden Budget Gap a bit.

But, all states get vast amounts of federal money returned to them one way or another, and we can expect much of it to dry up just because it isn't there. Combined with the recession and reduced state tax receipts, watch your wallet.

6. Already seen both - here
new sales tax. Further cuts in almost all areas of the state budget - some massive. And this was all BEFORE the latest round of tax cuts.
