Blair talked Bush out of bombing al-Jazeera: report

LONDON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush planned to bomb pan-Arab television broadcaster al-Jazeera, British newspaper the Daily Mirror said, citing a Downing Street memo marked "Top Secret".

The five-page transcript of a conversation between Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair reveals that Blair talked Bush out of launching a military strike on the station, unnamed sources told the daily which is against the war in Iraq.>>>snip

A source told the Mirror: "The memo is explosive and hugely damaging to Bush.

"He made clear he wanted to bomb al-Jazeera in Qatar and elsewhere. Blair replied that would cause a big problem.

"There's no doubt what Bush wanted to do -- and no doubt Blair didn't want him to do it."

Another source said: "Bush was deadly serious, as was Blair. That much is absolutely clear from the language used by both men."

A spokesman for Blair's Downing Street office said: "We have got nothing to say about this story. We don't comment on leaked documents."

The Mirror said such a strike would have been "the most spectacular foreign policy disaster since the Iraq war itself."

11. Remember how long it took for the DSM to hit the MSM?
In was in the internet for a long time before TV ever touched it.

You are right but maybe things have changed at little bit.

The DSM wasn't picked up by yahoo this quick that is why it needs to be rated up.

12. Go ask Joe America about the DSM. Joe is still clueless
and ill-informed Joe accepts getting lied to about all these things by senate committees.

I rated it up but I don't have much hope of this leading anywhere.

The Man Who Sold the War

Some clips:

...By the time the Gulf War came to a close in 1991,
the Rendon Group was firmly established as
Washington's leading salesman for regime change. But
Rendon's new assignment went beyond simply
manipulating the media. After the war ended, the Top
Secret order signed by President Bush to oust Hussein
included a rare "lethal finding" -- meaning deadly
action could be taken if necessary. Under contract to
the CIA, Rendon was charged with helping to create a
dissident force with the avowed purpose of violently
overthrowing the entire Iraqi government.

...Thomas Twetten, the CIA's former deputy of
operations, credits Rendon with virtually creating the
INC. "The INC was clueless," he once observed. "They
needed a lot of help and didn't know where to start.
That is why Rendon was brought in." Acting as the
group's senior adviser and aided by truckloads of CIA
dollars, Rendon pulled together a wide spectrum of
Iraqi dissidents and sponsored a conference in Vienna
to organize them into an umbrella organization, which
he dubbed the Iraqi National Congress. Then, as in
Panama, his assignment was to help oust a brutal
dictator and replace him with someone chosen by the
CIA... This time the target was Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein and the agency's successor of choice was Ahmad
Chalabi, a crafty, avuncular Iraqi exile beloved by
Washington's neoconservatives.

...The secret targeting of foreign journalists may
have had a sinister purpose. Among the missions
proposed for the Pentagon's Office of Strategic
Influence was one to "coerce" foreign journalists and
plant false information overseas. Secret briefing
papers also said the office should find ways to
"punish" those who convey the "wrong message." One
senior officer told CNN that the plan would "formalize
government deception, dishonesty and misinformation."

19. This story needs publicity. More from the article:
The Mirror said such a strike would have been "the most spectacular foreign policy disaster since the Iraq war itself."

The newspaper said that the memo "casts fresh doubt on claims that other attacks on al-Jazeera were accidents". It cited the 2001 direct hit on the channel's Kabul office.
(snip)
It's time people started paying attention to this tyrant. They appear to believe since he's murdering and plotting murder on people "over there," he won't be dangerous to people "over here."

They don't see there's any connection. They don't realize those people "over there" have a right to live without Bush's Bogus War destroying their lives, killing their loved ones.
