You can't imagine how many surgeries and procedures and hospitalizations and teasing people born with this birth defect endure.
I'm not calling you out...I am taking an opportunity to educate you.
This is a schoolyard taunt. It is mean, whether or not you intended it to be mean spirited.
Not to mention that the children are the ones that suffer the greatest from this.
Pointing out that an adult--who may or may not have had--a cleft repair, is insulting and degrading.

that sort of comic relief is used against fat people, some Arabs were using it the other day in the arab-american comic something or other comedy hour (?) (some of it was in the AMY GOODMAN DEMOCRACY NOW program the other day), to alleviate the intense prejudice which has been born against them...

Thanks :) I do think you're right. I mean I wasn't making fun of people with harelips, I was just making a comment about how strange Cheney's top lip is all the time and I wondered if he had a harelip is all.

Other things I've commented have been witty, and people who are overly sensitive have said things and I wasn't meaning any harm then either.

The ones MOST affected by this type of criticism are children since the repairs are done when the children are young.
Most have very lasting physical and mental scars from their ordeal.
I don't think it is fodder for jokes.
Calling someone a "harelip" is no better than an ethnic slur.

That you find humor in birth defects.
I, too, appreciate a good joke. But not one that, if heard, would make children question if it was worth it to go through the multiple surgeries that it takes to repair this defect if people will just call them "harelip" later on in life.
On this very board a few weeks ago, there is at least one DU'er who was born with this defect. She stated that if given the choice, if she knew she was carrying a child with this defect, she would abort.
Therein lies your answer about comic relief. A parent would not abort a child simply because it was fat, or black, or latino, etc.
This person knows the REAL pain behind the insensitivity shown to people who suffer from this malady. Enough to want to protect another human being from going through the same pain.
For the record, Dick Cheney does NOT have a cleft deformity.
If anything he has had a stroke. He is a just an evil man that exudes ugliness in every aspect. His appearance on the outside is the window to his soul and his disdain for the common man.
