1. In this most dismal of presidencies why the stubborn polarity?
It is discouraging to me to think that the nation has been successfully divided into two
uncompromising camps that seem to be immune to current events.

My admittedly sidewalk take on all this is that the hate issues; god, guns and gays for example are encouraged as hot buttons to deflect from a sober debate about such trivial matters as education, health care and imperialism. On reflection though, it seems to
me I just stated the obvious. Discouraging never the less.

2. This sorry state of affairs

IMHO I see two very distinct problems. One is that the media in the past 40 years has gone corporate. It is hard to be nonbiased when your very livlihood depends on how you slant the news coverage. The second major problem I see with the way things are is that we have a lack of in-depth education going on . I remember well, discussing the newspaper in class and then also at home having dinner and watching the news and being a part of those discussions also. Today we have a three second bite mentality and the attention span to go along with it. We do not force ourselves to study an issue and then make a reasoned conclusion. We let others make our judgements for us because we have created a vacume.

This is what I appreciate about this board, I'm new here, but have lurked for some time. I appreciate all the discussion and research. It gets beyond the fluff of a headline. Gotta admit, I enjoy the humor also. Thanks for letting me have my say and also for being a part of it! In Peace-TacomaMikeC
