DU Military Vets Check-in for Veterans Day
Hey Folks,

I did this last year, and I think it was well received. I'm going to be away tomorrow, so I thought we could get an early start. Here's my data:

US Navy Active Duty
21 years and counting
Started as an "E-nothing", earned a commission through the LDO Program
Proud "bleeding heart liberal"

For too long, the freakers of this world, and the Repuke Party have strutted around acting like they own the military. I swore an oath to the Constitution, not any political party or dogma.

Let's show what we know to be true. Liberals and Democrats of all persuasions love and defend this country. WE DO NOT PLAY DRESS-UP!! Here's my favorite quote from a true American and Naval hero.

"I can think of no finer career. And any man, who may asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile...can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, 'I served in the United States Navy'" - John F Kennedy, 1 August 1963.

4. Thanks for posting that JFK quote shipmate
I'm a former active duty Naval officer of twenty years and am as liberal as they get.

I'm proud to call you shipmate seeing as you worked your way up through the ranks. Good on you mustang!

Too many people think in the military you swear an oath to the country or the flag. You swear an oath to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States. The same oath, I might add, that bush took. Though he seems hell bent on ignoring the constitution.

I've said it several times before, but it needs to be said again.

"The standard should not be that the government has a military it can be proud of...it should be THAT THE MILITARY HAS A GOVERNMENT IT CAN BE PROUD OF!!"

Let's vote these "effers" out of Office and give our military a government to be proud of.

7. 20 Years USN enlisted.
SM1(SW)

USS LaSalle
USS New Orleans
USS Harry W. Hill
USS Waddell
RTC San Diego
USS Elliot
USS Copeland
USS Denver
USNS Mercy
NH San Diego
USS Thach

7 Deployments

Lay of the Last Signalman
On a thickly wooded sponson where the last projector stands
The museum pair of hand flags hanging idly in my hands
With my jargon half forgotten of my stock in trade bereft
I wonder what's ahead of me, the only bunting left.

The relics of my ancient craft have vanished one by one
The cruiser arc, the Morse flag and manoeuvring lights have gone
And I hear they'd be as useless in the final global war
As the helio, the foghorn and the masthead semaphore.

The mast is sprouting gadgets like a nightmare Christmas tree
With whips and stubs and waveguards where my halyards used to be
And I couldn't hoist a tack-line through that lunatic array
For at every height and angle there's a dipole in the way.

The alert and hawk-eyed signalman is rendered obsolete
By the electronically operated Optics of the Fleet
And the leaping barracuda or the charging submarines
Can be sighted as a blob upon a green florescent screen.

To delete the human error, to erase a noble breed
We rely upon a relay and we pin our faith in Creed
So we press a button, make a switch and spin a little wheel
And it's 100% efficient - if we're on an even keel.

But again I may be needed, for the time will surely come
When we have to talk in silence and the modern stuff is dumb
When the signal lamps are flashing or the flags are flying free
It was good enough for Nelson, and it's good enough for me.

91. Alpha - Alpha - Alpha
Old SM2 here. 4 and out. Many a watch I spent on Yankee Station sending Alpha's out to some unknown Maru, waiting for a Kilo in reply. What ship we'd ask in flashing lights. Friend or foe we had to know or risk the Captains wrath.
I did 3 cruises to Yankee Station (69-71) on the old Hancock CVA-19.

Thanks for that poem. I had never seen it before.

on vets day remember the 138 guys (average age 20yrs) who died and kept the first super carrier from going to the bottom, thanks to McNamara's "fight it on the cheap" and using left over Korean war bombs....those who wouldn't go to Vietnam are doomed to repeat it..BTW, thank you for asking, it is a little remembered piece of history.:patriot:

179. I think John McCain thinks about them, too
On July 29, 1967, tragedy struck one of the mightiest aircraft carriers in the U.S. fleet, the USS Forrestal. One of its jets accidentally fired a rocket across the flight deck and into a plane occupied by pilot John McCain. The lieutenant barely escaped his burning jet before one of its 1,000-pound bombs exploded only 1 minute and 34 seconds into the fire. That horrific explosion wiped out dozens of the crew instantly, including almost all of the specially trained firefighters.

Small world....

Maybe the MODS could combine our two posts together. I have no ego, and would welcome the opportunity to see that we get a good turnout on "the mall".

87. Doesn't matter about combining
I was trying to brainstorm something inventive that we could all do without having to travel to DC (although I live close enough to do it) that would make a statement about the state of torture, or the chickenhawks and express our displeasure.

So I'm pissing and moaning about how few want to get on board, off our collective asses and DO SOMETHING. Perhaps it speaks more to my lack of communication skils than to veteran apathy, but it's pissing me off.

He did his 20 plus, despite threatening pretty much every year he couldn't take it anymore and wanted out (his ultra liberal views and the fact that he was from Massachusetts made military life for him a bit more difficult than it might have been, had he 'fit in' better). He even got caught in a stop-loss in '02 that kept him in 6 months past his actual retirement date.
He now works as a defense contractor - with Air Force personnel, at Hanscom AFB in Mass. and still argues politics every day. Funny how that worked out :-)

This country could not possibly care less about its veterans. Makes me glad I got out after four and don't have to depend on the "largesse" of the decimated Veteran's Administration programs.

All talk, no action. That's the American attitude toward all the men and women who were killed or permanently damaged---it once wasn't but now all you have to do is buy a "ribbon" or yap about "support" and that is all you owe. But, it isn't.

92. thanks to all you veterans. also my family is a full of them.
although i would never fight in a war, unless the constitution was in danger. some thing that has not happened since 1941. same goes for my family...

mom's side of the family fought in the revolutionary war in 1775, and every succeeding war until 1945. in fact in the civil war my grandmother's side fought in the union, and my grandfather's family fought in the Confederacy. which was strange since i found out they were abolishinst. i think a brother snuck off or some thing. they only fought and deafened the Constitution, and they were all quakers. my grandfather's brothers all fought in WW2 he was too young. so he went over as a civil engineer to germany in 1950ish??? to help in the reconstruction. my dad's side were all midwest farmers and i believe they had a lot of brothers in ww2 too.

it was cool researching that my moms side has been here in america for so long.

i suggest you all should do a family tree.

No Across-the-Board Review of PTSD Cases – Secretary Nicholson
November 10, 2005

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will not review the files of 72,000 veterans currently receiving disability compensation for post-traumatic stress disorder, the Department's secretary announced today.

On May 19, 2005, VA's Inspector General reported on an examination of the files of a sample of 2,100 randomly selected veterans with disability ratings for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The IG cited insufficient documentation in the files and a dramatic increase in veterans filing for disability compensation for post-traumatic stress disorder since 1999.

"We have now just completed our own careful review of those 2,100 files cited in the IG's report,' said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "The problems with these files appear to be administrative in nature, such as missing documents, and not fraud."

"In the absence of evidence of fraud, we're not going to put our veterans through the anxiety of a widespread review of their disability claims,' Nicholson said."Instead, we're going to improve our training for VA personnel who handle disability claims and toughen administrative oversight."

"Not all combat wounds are caused by bullets and shrapnel," Nicholson added. "We have a commitment to ensure veterans with PTSD receive compassionate, world-class health care and appropriate disability compensation determinations."

131. Veterans Make Up More Than One-Fourth of Atlanta's Homeless (WABE)
I don't want to bring anybody down, but I thought we all should take a moment to remember Our Vets who most have forgotten and can't be with us on-line. This Radio News report will be broadcast here in Atlanta on Veterans Day.

Though I was lucky enough to have grown up between Vietnam and Iraq, I felt it was important to remember the 2000+ American War Veterans living on the streets of my current home town, Atlanta, Georgia. Click the link below to goto the WABE website, where you can click the link to the MP3, the audio is 4 minutes and 45 seconds(4:45).

Peace, Thank You for you service and,
Welcome Home. :patriot:

Veterans Make Up More Than One-Fourth of Atlanta's Homeless Population

By Philip Graitcer

ATLANTA, GA. (2005-11-10) Veterans'Day is when the nation honors members of its military services.

But while some veterans are being honored, others have been forgotten.

On any night, almost 2-thousand of Atlanta's homeless are veterans.

That's more than one-fourth of metro Atlanta's total homeless population, according to a recent survey.

WABE's Philip Graitcer visited with some homeless veterans on the streets of downtown Atlanta.

Got out when Reagan was elected, sure enough our detachment was sent to Honduras in the 80s. I entered the Army when they were phasing out the WACs, but it was really co-ed training like they have now. Did my BT at FT McClellan which is no longer there.

Went in E1 out a Spec 4.

Got to drive a landrover off a taxi-ing C130 once during field training. Pretty cool, lots fun, good people for the most part.

161. Thanks and Remembrance
This family - Vietnam Army vet (spouse) and active duty Army in Iraq now (son). Thank you and all of you for your courage and your service to this country.

This quote was intended for Memorial Day. Every time I read it, though, I keep being reminded of all the "lost souls" who are still alive but not with us. The homeless, the mentally ill and all those whose service to this country left them seriously damaged deserve to also be honored on Veterans Day.

REMEMBER

If you are able,
Save a place for them
Inside of you. And
save one backward glance
When you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say that you loved them,
Though you may not have always.

Take what they have left,
And what they have taught you
With their dying
And keep it your own.

And in a time
When men decide and feel safe
To call war insane,

Take one moment to embrace
Those gentle heroes
You left behind.

Written by Major Michael Davis O'Donnell, helicopter pilot;
1 January 1970, Dak To, Vietnam; KIA on March 24, 1970
