Evolution and Avian Flu...a test of faith (my 1,000th post)
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 02:15 PM by brooklynite
Yesterday, as we saw, the Kansas School Board voted to impose "Intelligent Design" on their students under the guise of "science". (fortunately, educational sanity was restored in Dover, PA). Today we see a new warning that a flu pandemic derived from the currently spreading avian flu strain is inevitable. And, we've already heard that flue vaccines may be in short supply.

To deal with this crisis, I have a proposal: the advocates of creationism and ID should now step forward and voluntarily decline any rights to receive flu vaccines. Why? The answer is simple: Creationists and Bible literalists profess that God created man and all life in its final form; no "evolution" or changes allowed. Therefore the avian flu virus currently spreading, which is only dangerous to birds, couldn't possibly mutate into something hazardous to human beings. Therefore, they won't need any vaccines.

Seems like a fair test of faith, doesn't it?

1. Not only do I agree, but I say go one further
they should not only not get the vaccine, but they should all be 'volunteers' for chicken farms.* let's see how strong their faith is.

* sarcasm duly noted.

6. I have a sun conure named Icarus
but he is an indoor bird. I would be very crushed if something happened to him though.

What kind of birds do you live with?

5. I heard a story on the radio here in NM on Monday,
The rumor I heard is that 8 cases of the human Bird Flu have been 100% confirmed to be linked to "cock fighting" in SE Asia, and that it was suspected that a large percentage of the other 100 or so would be linked to "cock fighting" also. Have you heard the same thing anywhere? The manner in which people could be infected seems plausable, and "cock fighting" in SE Asia is a big deal. The rumor also went on to say that authorities have been trying to gain some ground with the people involved in the fighting, but because the birds are so valuable to the owners that they are hidden, and that it is believed that underground selling and trading of birds is one way the flu will migrate.

NM is one of only two states in the country where "cock fighting" is still legal. Louisana is the other. I'm not joking, NM is still legal to raise birds to fight to the death. If for no other reason THIS should be enough of a possibility to get Bill Richarson's attention and ban this shit.

7. One of the fundies I work with is eagerly awaiting this -- he thinks it
will thin the population of "sinners" since China etc. are not Christian nations. I need my job, so I can't just punch people in the mouth when they really need it.
