Daniel Schorr said that Rush Limbaugh was hypocritical
and therefore it was OK to cover his drug abuse thoroughly. He said Limbaugh made his money being critical of everybody else's weaknesses and therefore it was legitimate to talk about his problem. (I am paraphrasing, since I don't have a tape of the event).

This happened during a panel discussion on "media ethics" in C-span 2. Te moderator, right after this, said "well, we have no more time. Thanks for coming." Ha!

This was the ONLY interesting and unbiased opinion I heard during this discussion, by the way. The media (as shown in that discussion) are a group of self-satistified, self-righteous talking heads.

2. Me too... I think I might have to get away from DU for a while.
Knowing what is going on seems to make it worse?

I feel so discouraged...

But I am "kind of" addicted to DU.

5. I understand what you're feeling, LittleApple
Finally "getting it" last year really bummed me out. It's the same thing I felt when I finally "got" the fact that religion is a joke.

If you're religious, I'm not trying to engage you in a fight. I am merely stating my opinion. Fundamentalist religions ensnare your mind. They don't allow you to think freely about other things, such as politics. Once my mind was free, it got really bummed.

The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

I don't want to get too involved in the knowledge of what is going on because I feel discouraged, also. I ran into a prof of mine who is leading the fight against Bush in this county and he looked just awful. He looked like he'd been in a fight.

We (all of us) have to balance our knowledge with day-to-day living. I know I do. I tend to get obsessed. I've been obsessed with the religion thing and now the Bush thing. Somehow the two seem so related. I don't know if Bush really believes in his religion, but he certainly uses it effectively to keep people like my mother and most of the fundies in this county in lock-step.

Heil Bush, mein Fuhrer mit Gott!

Or however you'd say it correctly in German.

6. And LadyHawk I know how you're feeling. With knowledge comes
sorrow. I'll be 65 in November, and believe me, I've grown a lot wiser and a lot more sorrowful. But, you know, I still believe in the goodness of most human beings. Every day I learn things that astound me. I've learned a lot about the human spirit on this very website.

Please, everyone should be encouraged that we're not alone in realizing the badness of what is happening. If history tells us anything, it is that people have not always realized the badness until it killed them. We are very blessed. We see the problem.

9. Progress in Religion
Consider that a whole civilization had to labor to send a Pharoah into the afterlife. Now just about everyone has the potential for an eternity in heaven. I don't believe it either, but the improvement in efficiency is impressive.

7. Daniel Schorr is always on the money, but....
Doesn't anyone notice how gross his voice is? He sounds like that Carvel Ice Cream guy hawking fudgy the whale cakes and drooling all over his microphone. No offense, like I said, he's always, always insightful and intelligent, and I consistently agree with his NPR pieces (except I remember one piece he did around the time of the Iraq invasion supporting the Administration's decisions...anyone else remember this? Kinda trned me off to NPR for a while...)
