Sen. Tom Coburn: Body Language Soothsayer
At first, it seemed like a great idea to me: since so many cheap, lying lawyers were to be found in our congress, why not give some other guys a chance? Yeah! How about doctors? Everyone knows you have to be really smart to learn all that chemistry and other science to succeed in med school... why not get some really smart guys up there? Besides, doctors are more honest than lawyers!

Sen. Tom Coburn: Body Language Soothsayer

On MTP today, Sen. Tom Coburn said that because of his medical training he can tell if somebody is lying just by using their body language.

SEN. COBURN on Roberts: I've tried to use my medical skills of observation of body language to ascertain your uncomfortableness and ill at ease with questions and responses. I will tell you that I am very pleased both in my observational capabilities as a physician to know that your answers have been honest and forthright as I watch the rest of your body respond to the stress that you're under.

MR. RUSSERT: Do you believe as a physician you can tell whether a candidate for the Supreme Court is telling the truth?

SEN. COBURN: Mm-hm, I certainly have.
MR. RUSSERT: Has any--have you ever detected someone lying?
SEN. COBURN: Uh-huh, lots of times.

Pardon me, I'm just your average computer jockey, but would I be forgetting my place if I asked if doctors could just, like, maybe stick to treating sick people?

1. Republican doctors have special powers.
For example: Dr. Frist-Mengele was able to diagnose Terri Schiavo by looking at a few minutes of videotape. How awesome is that?

2. And Russert didn't think to ask him if he could tell if Terry Schiavo was
lying on Fristy's videotape. Damn Timmy never asks the question we all want answered.

5. If his diagnostic skills are as stellar as his grasp of English syntax,
you want Coburn NOWHERE NEAR your body.

6. So just where in med school do they squeeze in the body language
training? I don't think a med school education necessarily qualifies anyone as a truth detector. If it did, why would there be so many republican doctors? :eyes:

This sounds to me like more of the "trust me, I'm a doctor" shit we got from Frist earlier.

7. "The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some considered
to be unnatural." ;-)

Tom Coburn is so powerful with the dark side he can decide whether or not a person is lying just by giving them one of his stupid, blank stares while he is thinking about sterlizing women and executing abortion doctors(which is what he wants to do).

10. I've waited for a Republican to claim special powers for me to use that
line on. I'm not suprised that Tom Coburn provided me with the opportunity.

11. That has to be frustrating
Having such a gem, such a zinger, and then being forced to sit on it just sucks.

8. Now, I'm no reporter, but doesn't this seem like something
Edited on Mon Nov-07-05 10:19 AM by ComerPerro
that an interviewer should challenge, rather than just let slide by?

Maybe Russert doesn't have the same "instincts" I do.

But, if it were me, and Coburn said this crock of shit to me, I'd say, "how about a little test, then, Dr. Coburn?

"This morning for breakfast I had a bowl of Corn Flakes, a glass of orange juice, and a banana.

"This morning it took me fifty minutes to get to work."

"I am wearing grey boxers"

Etc, etc.

"Or, Dr. Coburn, how about, The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa"

12. Bush should put him in his Cabinet...
Bush can look in their eyes and see their soul and Coburn can interpret their body language. We can do away with the CIA budget.

13. I'd go even farther. Why don't he watch Bush and Cheney and then
tell us whether they are lying?
