What country did Nixon visit in South America when his limo was attacked?
This was back when he was VP under Eisenhower, I think? But he was welcomed by a very unfriendly crowd. He may have even feared for his life. Is it possible Bush may get a similar welcome today? But Chicken George seldom will go into any place that is not friendly to him....

1. He usually gets the extreme security measures he wants.
I don't know what kind of threats he uses or conditions he places on his visits. I wonder if the South Americans will play along with giving him what he wants with regard to security. I wonder if they will be able to give him what he wants in that regard.

17. Yes, indeed.
My family was assigned to Venezuela about 2 years after Nixon's trip. The anti-American feelings were still boiling. Despite many precautions, two of our neighbors were killed. The men in our neighborhood ran armed patrols at night for awhile. It could be nightmarish at times. It was considered "hazardous duty' to be assigned there and employees were paid extra on that basis.

12. Heh. "The MorAn Doctrine"
But Nixon's most famous trips were still to come. When he set off for South America in 1958, he anticipated an uneventful tour that would merely distract him from his attempts to talk the administration into cutting taxes at home. He was unprepared for the vehemence of the anti-American demonstrations he would encounter from those opposing U.S. policy toward Latin America. In Peru, Nixon was blocked from visiting San Marcos University by a crowd of demonstrators chanting "Go Home Nixon!" He was met in Venezuela by hostile crowds that spat at him as he left his plane. In the capital, Caracas, the scene turned violent. A mob surrounded his car and began rocking it back and forth, trying to turn it over and chanting "Death to Nixon." Protected by only twelve Secret Service agents, the procession was forced to wait for the Venezuelan military to clear a path of escape. But by that time, the car had been nearly demolished and the vice president had seen his fill of South America. President Eisenhower sent a naval squadron to the Venezuelan coast in case they needed to rescue the vice president, but Nixon quietly left the country the next day.

10. Help me with some details here:
If I recall correctly on that same trip, didn't Nixon engage in an informal debate with some college students in Mexico City? I seem to remember reading something about him informally facing a hostile audience who were pissed off about US policy.

Say what you will about Ol' Tricky Dick, he was not afraid to take questions and he could think on his feet. I think about that a lot when I hear about * and his preselected audiences.

Come to think of it, I would REALLY like to have heard Nixon's thoughts on what it happening now.

11. Why would you care what "Tricky Dick" thoughts were on
present day Washington?

You honestly think he'd condemn this?

Get real, most of these SOB's learned at Nixon's knee.

13. Y'know that is a good question.
I don't think he'd condemn this, but I still would be intereted in his perspective on what the Whitehouse should do when it is facing legal jeopardy and an increasingly unpopular war.

Please don't take me as a Nixon apologist, I most certainly am not. If anything I would be interested in how the crafty old bastard would figure out a way to support this current bunch of criminals.
