Pickles using the (gasp) Clinton China this evening!

n this photo released by the White House, the table settings in the State Dining Room for the White House dinner in honor of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are shown Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005. Chosen by first lady Laura Bush, the centerpieces are sprays of white phaeleanopsis orchids displayed in vermeil vases which compliment the Clinton China and vermeil flatware. I finally found the menu and some mention of guests here:

The 130 guests were seated in a State Dining Room outfitted in a simple gold-and-white decor. The four-course menu - the debut of new White House chef Cristeta Comerford - featured celery-and-shrimp soup, buffalo medallions, salad, and petits fours cake and chartreuse ice cream for dessert.

2. It is very beautiful.

Very fitting for a future King.
Nancy's china was much too flowery (gaudy) and dated and Laura probably picked stonewear.
Does that mean that Hillary has better taste?
Yah...I would think so.

Reagan china (which they served Princess Di and Prince Charles on)

13. The Clinton china looks nice,
but I think the Reagan china looks smart too! I do wonder whether Laura hasn't gone overboard with obsessive color combination - virtually everything is golden-colored. It's a bit much. One more color in those settings wouldn't have been bad.

38. I think it's insulting to cram 10 people at those tiny tables, though,
at a STATE DINNER. That's what they do to us at veterinary conferences, trying to save money. There should be no more than 8, and preferably 6, at one of those tables.

5. Royalist pretentions. Trays from a prison and plastic knives and forks
would have been more appropriate for the group Laura and Shrub have assembled.

6. Why a state dinner for a non-head of state??
Having one for Blair, yes. But for someone with no current political standing??? Whose main accomplishment seems to be choosing the right parents? Oh, wait a minute - that could apply to Bush or Charlie

9. Seems Laura likes the Clinton china-she used it for her 1st state dinner
"The color scheme was white, gold and green. The tables were covered with sage damask tablecloths, and the Bushes selected the new gold-rimmed Clinton china, vermeil flatware and gold candlesticks. The centerpieces featured white roses, white hydrangeas and white Casablanca lilies, accented with fresh limes."

WTF does pickles think they are? Gardenias? There should be a law against doing that to orchids.

It's very rare for them to throw parties...they are social losers and homebodies.

36. Why I bothered to do this I don't know, but:
Yolanda Burt, the assistant director of Career Services, told an interesting story about how one very proper and worldly man deals with unforeseen food problems.
Prince Charles is a vegetarian but sometimes he finds himself at formal functions where meat is the main course. So, he simply cuts up the meat and pushes it around his plate. It looks like he's eating it, but he's really not. So everyone is happy.
Bill Tillman, a Career Services coordinator and project manager of the etiquette dinner, recognized the widespread problem of "etiquette anxiety," which will follow a person throughout his or her life if not properly managed.
