You do GIS? I ask because I plan to take some courses while I work on a PhD in Urban Studies - I want to utilise GIS for my work concerning revitalisation of New Orleans - I'd like to do some training on my own right away, and would appreciate any advice. (I use Mac OS Tiger/UNIX).

12. There are many databases that handle spatial data today

and you can use SQL to basic analysis. Postgres has a pretty nice spatial implementation and MySQL has one as well. I generally use ESRI products which run on Windows. There is also an interesting open-source project called map server out of the Univ of Minnesota (I think). Are you in NOLA? I ask because there is an outside chance that I might end up doing a consulting gig for the city. A friend works at Microsoft and is trying to bring me in for GIS expertise.

I live there, but not at the moment because I need a new roof and remodeling done to my house. I want to get involved with GIS so that I can help rebuild my city - you know, be an educated voice for my community. We don't want too many oustide experts deciding what's good for us. We, too, want to be directly involved in what happens to our city. Most of us are unemployed now, homeless, and inundated with contractors (who have mostly hired illegal immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, etc.), land speculators, and casino developers. As I write this, fatcats are drooling over blue prints, their vision of our city... :(
