Raw Story's CIA leak reporting
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 09:07 AM by rawstory
Hey guys:

I've noticed some comments on Raw Story about our reporting on the case being "bullshit," and I want to debunk myths about our reporting and also field questions, as time allows. To me, I think a lot of folks are responding to a "disappointing" outcome of the Fitzgerald investigation, and the fact that Fitzgerald changed his mind a lot in the last week. Also -- I think folks are frustrated with our banner headlines. I do want to personally apologize (and I take full responsibility for) "hyping" stories last week. It was an exciting time and the stories were excellent and I should have tempered the headlines so as not to unduly raise expecations.

We stand by our accurate reporting. Most notable, thus far, was that we were the first to report that Cheney was being investigated, something that was subsequently confirmed by Bloomberg News, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. We also reported that two Cheney aides were cooperating in the probe (John Hannah, David Wurmser), which was corroborated by the New York Daily News, the Seattle Times, and others (the New York Times confirmed Hannah).

We also reported that Fitzgerald was seeking indictments against Rove and Libby for perjury and obstruction of justice. He did -- which you can see from myriad news reports. Rove's laywer secured a last minute reprieve (which Newsweek partially explained Sunday) by calling in a White House Communications staffer Adam Levine to get Rove off the perjury charge.

We reported that an indictment had been issued on Wednesday, and we reported that there would be at least one indictment. Again, both claims were accurate. We were one of only a few news agencies that actually got what charges Fitzgerald was seeking against Libby right -- obstruction of justice and perjury. We reported that it was unlikely Libby would be charged with the 1982 act because the jury was skeptical. Again, we were right. We reported after the indictment that Fitzgerald was strongly focused on Rove -- which later reports authenticated.

I'm welcome to hear where we made mistakes. Here's a few I know we made: I put up an errant teaser suggesting Bolton was the Under Secretary named in the indictment (it was Marc Grossman); our most recent Cheney story said he testified in 2003 (it was 2004); and our most recent Cheney story suggested Wilson gave a written report (it was an oral report). We're still working out the details about Wurmser's role in providing Libby information. And we've begun to piece together what information Hannah and Wurmser contributed to the indictment, which we'll report on as we have it nailed down.

Some papers did make mistakes. Among them is the New York Times. For example:

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 - I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, first learned about the C.I.A. officer at the heart of the leak investigation in a conversation with Mr. Cheney weeks before her identity became public in 2003, lawyers involved in the case said Monday.

Cheney, the indictment revealed, was not the first to tell Libby about Plame's identity. That came from the State Department's Mark Grossman, who, you'll learn in our reporting later this week, obtained it from someone else.

Anyway, let's flesh this out. Our credibility is very important to us and we'd hate to be smeared by our own side because of the fact there weren't as many indictments as folks here might have wanted. And as everyone knows, there's a lot yet that HASN'T come out -- which I strongly believe will bring more mainstream reporters to what we have already confirmed. There is a far bigger set of people behind the indictment that aren't named in it because they were cooperating witnesses -- and that's something all of us had to expect going into it.

job the rest of our so-called mainstream media has done covering this pResident. ABSOLUTE GROSS DERELICTION OF DUTY.

You're doing fine. Keep it up. Maybe somebody in the majors will take a hint - and a lesson in genuinely fearless and objective reporting. Not toadying, fawning, worshipping echo chambers and stenographers. Note, this comes on a day when we see Editor and Publisher carrying an editorial exhorting the rest of the lazy ass media to fess up and apologize for willingly allowing themselves to be led off a cliff - thus taking all their readers with them.

I'm a fan of Raw Story and it's the first stop when checking the news. All news media has made mistakes and I don't sweat it all that much.

You guys have done some fabulous work and I hope it continues. Rumors were flying left and right out of the investigation and EVERYONE got it wrong. My gut told me Cheney would get indicted. I'm not as confident as I was that it's going to happen, but it still could.

Anyway, keep it up. You guys have a fan here!

It did get the Friday indictment pulled - but it is likely that there will still be a Rove indictment.

But because I'm a web designer, that's the sort of thing I nitpick. I've yet to have major issue with any of your stories.

I look at it this way, corporate newspapers, with, I'm guessing, much larger staff, get things wrong all the time. So, with that in mind, I understand mistakes can be made and I'm sure you correct them and announce the corrections when caught.

I believe you hit the nail on the head when you spoke of disappointment.

19. UPDATE: Why I posted this thread
Update: The responses to this post surprise me. A comment on our latest Cheney story purports to be from Skinner which says our stories are bullshit and we can no longer post them in LBN. That and a comment from Walt Starr -- who I really respect (he also used the word bullshit) -- incited me to make this post. Please be critical -- I'm trying to understand what people are upset with us about -- so we can better serve our readers.

89. Why does it matter either way? I don't know why people are so peeved
by this. What is the difference if they release a headline at first to tease for a story to come after or wait to put the whole story out later without the tease. Is it the tease? Does that drive people mad?

Are people that emotionally unstable?

I just can't understand the condascending attitude people take towards this. It is such a small thing. A mountain out of a molehill, if you will.

Geez...

I don't mind. In fact I like it and hope The Raw Story does it more. Maybe they can make people wait longer just to drive them more batty.

Developing...

When I asked those critics to post stories Raw story got wrong, they can't come up with any except for the number of indictments and the way I see it, everyone got those wrong.

Some have complained about the developing stories and I have to admit at times they seem overhyped.

32. The only thing that comes to mind are the teaser lines
When they're posted in LBN while they're developing it's annoying.

This story, (Plame investigation) being of such high interest here on DU, would generate multiple replies to a thread that wasn't actually news yet. When the 'breaking' story was edited to fit developments the LBN headline no longer was accurate. I noticed people getting upset by this.

I'm pretty sure I have seen finished Raw Story articles in LBN since then, however. They appear to just be moving the 'breaking' ones to a different forum.

If I were you I'd email Skinner and find out for sure if that's the case.

Keep up the good work, I enjoy what you're doing.

43. Well you gotta admit some of your stuff wasn't correct. A week ago
it was posted on RawStory that there were 22 people being indicted, then 12, then 2, then one.

That is ok because whomever fed you the stories were wrong. The reports were bullshit. That is just saying that the stories weren't accurate.

They did fed the frenzy here and caused lots of people to get their hopes up to the point where 1 indictment with 5 counts was a let down.

I don't like the let down part.

When you post stories that are speculation if you say so then people can make up their own mind to believe it or not. Speculation isn't bullshit reporting of speculation as fact is bullshit.

Not calling you bullshit just the speculation as fact part. I think if you do a little more vetting you'll be ok.

This type of thing happens all the time. People pretend to be me all the time on other websites. It is particularly easy for people to do so on websites that permit visitors to post messages without even providing a real email address, as is the case on your site.

For the record: I have never posted on any other website using the name "Skinner" or any variation of that name. Furthermore I never have and never would go to another progressive website in order to insult that website. I think someone is pulling your leg.

94. I always felt people would be critical of Raw Story headlines in LBN...
so as to avoid the conflict I usually post their pieces in the General Discussion Forum and raise the subject matter in general for discussion (no pun intended).

That way the theme is out, people can talk about it, and if the details come in later, they can be thrown in the thread while it is in progress.

I would understand more if people had a problem with The Raw Story headlines in LVN (not that I agree), but people even complain if it is in the GD forum. And I am probably wrong for giving in on this, but sometimes I don't want to be bothered by the crying when what I care about is the substance of what I am posting.

There is nothing more annoying that trying to have a substantive discussion in a thread and have a person complaining about something that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

That I don't understand. There are guidelines for LBN but very few for GD.

Sometimes it just seems like a contrarian argument and just brush it off after making a point or two.

It is just my opinion, but it sounds pretty "whinny" for the most part.

work still cling to traditional media as the only credible source. I said in response any info is only as good as the source who provides it no matter what the medium is. Having said that I think you are doing a pretty good job, BUT I absolutely hate it when you put up a headline and the story is not complete. Someone on here always posts it and when I go to look at the story it is completely frustrating that it is not ready. I also hate the fact that even though I have triple level pop-up protection I still get one when I log onto your site. Well anyway. Thanks for the info and for listening to my complaint.

36. The only problem I have
echoes #15 from Jersey Devil. The pop ups are very annoying; they fight with my popup blocker and the site doesn't load well. I'm on dial-up; I like quick and simple for websites. It doesn't stop me from going to your site, just from going there more often.

The content I do like though; you guys are doing pretty good. Of course you're not going to get every story 100% right. I don't expect perfection - just do your best. When you're wrong, admit it both to yourself and publicly, and learn from it. Most importantly, be loyal to the truth, and to the facts. You keep doing those things, you'll be fine.

105. Your claims that newspapers "confirmed" that Hannah & Wurmser turned
state's evidence weren't and aren't accurate. I followed the links in your articles to the "confirmations" and the newspapers' articles were mentioning that one or the other or both (whichever the case in that instance) had testified or at most, in one article as I recall, prosecutors were looking at their testimony as significant.

That is not at all the same as confirmation or corroboration that these guys turned state's evidence. Or that they were cooperating with the investigation to any greater degree than the other witnesses who showed up and testified. (Remember Libby and Rove's attorneys liked to point out that their clients were "cooperating" with the investigation. That just meant they showed up and testified.)

Your assertions that these newspapers confirmed your reporting that these witnesses turned state's evidence is simply, strictly speaking, not true. The NYT mentioning at the tail end an article that Hannah testified (if memory serves) does not constitute confirmation of your report that he had turned state's evidence.

Yes, perhaps that seeming tossed off mention in the newspaper's article was there for a reason since it wasn't necessary to the story. Perhaps it was there as an oblique hint. But it wasn't the confirmation or corroboration you still claim it was.

Hannah and Wurmser may indeed have turned state's evidence. But I find your claims that other papers confirmed your reporting that these guys turned as sloppy at best and at worst, an intentional misleading of your readers in an attempt to add credibility up your reporting.

If you know you've really got the goods, you don't need to do that. It detracts from your credibility and integrity. That's worse than mere hype headlines, that's inaccurate misleading reporting that a reader can see for himself.

50. There will always be critics, but the one's that count are those with some
substance. Most in this case, in my opinion, have been of the trolling style.

I don't mind having disagreements on some substance, but for the most part the attacks I have seen on the threads here in DU have been unsupported comparisons to Drudge and complaining about the sensationalist style.

The anticipation makes the news a little more interesting.

What matters is the accuracy of the reporting and that has been very good for the most part. All media gets some things wrong occasionally.

I visit the site a few times a day to see what is on the bleeding edge.

Keep up the good work.

...the site does need some work though. I like the color scheme, maybe it is just the layout. Stretch it out to be wider and center it. Give yourself some more real estate. Don't worry about giving it some more whitespace, it is healthy, and will make things easier to read and stand out more. Things are a little cramped.

Thanks

I've had your site bookmarked since last fall and I visit there at least twice a day during the week, and at least once a day on the weekend. It's been my experience that your reporting is usually dead-on, and you often scoop the MSM. 60. I'll echo what some other's here are saying.
I did get somewhat annoyed by the recent spate of "breaking" headlines that tended to fizzle out or be repeats of old news. In the past I've usually checked your site a few times a day, but I found myself not doing that after repeated dissapointments.

Your site has been a good resource and hopefully will continue to be so, but be careful with the over-hyping. It may pull in people at first but will eventually drive them away. You're obviously already aware of this but I thought that it needed to be emphasized that the practice may be doing you more harm then good.

As to the issue of popups, everyone needs to realize that you need a source of income and the popups provide that. Maybe a less annoying method could be found but if not then you need to do what you need to do. Just keep in mind that to much of it can also drive people away.

One question, why "RawStory"? It's always seemed like an unfortunate choice of name to me. Very tabloid-ish. Like a 50's combination detective story and girlie magazine. When I recommend your website to people, I always feel the need to say something like "in spite of the unfortunate name...". Obviously you shouldn't change it now since you've built a reputation but it's something I've been curious about.

This is all meant as constructive criticism, overall you're VERY much needed and appreciated.

of Rawstory and I couldn't understand. I called a particular poster on being negative towards Rawstory and disregarding the story you were reporting for no reason other than it came from your website which I find reliable. There were actually several people who were showing alot of anger toward RS here. I'm surprised that those people haven't posted here yet today since they have a chance to address you and any problems they have directly. It makes me wonder if I was right that the poster was just being negative and complaining about the fact that the headline said "Developing". 128. sometimes people lob criticism b/c a publication is doing WELL, real well
too well.

this last week saw a major upsurge in all sorts of complaining. the thing about forum-complaining tho, it that it's anonymous. and sometimes hijacked as with Skinner and the comment thing.

i'm always a little suspicious when the wet blankets start flying. if forums are guilty of one thing over anything else, it's groupthink. wet blankets are, by nature, independent and therefore require nurturing to become more than just a passing thought. when the critique gets hot, it's always good to take a peak outside of the box and see what other people are saying on other sites.

not that every complainer does so in bad faith...it's just that the motivation for complaining is always greater with those who would like to see something fail. there's plenty of good-faith constructive complainers. i just think that for a critical mass to be achieved, it's usually necessary, but not sufficient that it's all in good faith.

(i have no idea why your post made me go here with this -- i ran a newspaper and have experienced more than my fair share of bad-faith crit and i always hate to see it go 'this' far).

and since their criticism seemed flimsy have called them to task a few times.
I consider Rawstory to be like other blogs in that they are posting insider information that does leave them susceptible to being manipulated by unsavory sources, but I take that into account with ALL things I read.

I find it interesting that one extremely vocal critic is not even posting in this thread.

103. "The Liberal Alternative to Drudge"
That's truth in advertising, in your sig.

Some people think we could do without a liberal alternative to Drudge. For the record: I don't read Drudge. Couldn't give a fig about that useless waste of bytes and bandwidth.

Maybe there are some people out there, who don't read DU, or fully utilize its resources, who do need an alternative to Drudge, or they'd never hear about some of the crap that goes on. All you're doing here is preaching to the choir, and those of us who, I guess, don't feel the need to be validated by a liberal answer to Drudge are already pretty well versed in the sermons.

I can't think of any Raw Story breaking headline on a story that DUers would not have known about, and in short time, if Raw Story did not exist. And we wouldn't have had those publishers coming to these forums and hyping the shit out of their own businesses/sites. We don't. The sheer amount of RAW STORY BREAKING in the headlines pretty much proves, AFAIC, the main reason anyone posts an RS headline here is purely to promote RS than clue anyone in to any particularly new facts.

As a longtime DUer who got along very well without Raw Story, for years, it's an annoyance.

101. In general, I like the Raw Story site, and check it for updates
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 01:48 PM by olafvikingr
on a regular basis. I do however have a couple of suggestions on things I think are issues, or have seen brought up here by others.

1) The teaser headlines often seem to imply more than the story really delivers. I have seen criticism suggeting this as attempts to "up" the number of hits the site gets for obvious monetary gain thorugh advertising, etc. I do not think this helps in making the site more accepted as a reliable news source.

2) I have noticed that often there will be a teaser headline, that when a story is later provided, it links to another media story, not a Raw Story report. While I understand the site appears to be fucntioning as a media repository as well as source, it seems somewhat deceiving. I large number of the links on Raw Story are not to reports actually done by Raw Story. I think you need more of your own stuff.

3) Irritating ads.

Now that I have been critcial, I also just want to point out that I repsect your organizations attempt to get news out there...real news. I read it, I check it, and overall I like it, you just need a bit of refinement I think. Keep working at it, and keep trying to find the truth...that is the most important thing...getting the facts and truth out so that people that read your articles know that they are getting something legitimate and that they can use your site to help make logical decisions and form valid view points.

102. I have no complaints with Raw Story
I did notice those consistently criticizing were a VERY SMALL number of posters who would try and hijack a thread and when that didn't work would start their own thread with a controversial header and the same SMALL group of poster would ensure it would keep going. I find that MUCH MORE aggravating than "Developing" being used by Raw Story.

Please keep doing what your doing, I certainly don't have any concerns and, to add to that, THANKS for all the work you people are doing!

It's when we ignore you that ya gotta start worrying. So far, you guys have been great. Your credibility is safe and you have earned a great deal of wiggle room for when you do get something wrong.

Thank you for your patriotism.

109. I believe
Raw Story is a good reliable news source for me. And the fact that you came in hear to get feedback is great. Your news credibility is still good here. Much higher than most MSM.

110. Fix your layout structure
It's very messy and unprofessional.

It doesn't need to look corporate, but just organized and clean.

111. tiny bit of advice to take or leave
never apologize for who you are. You are a timely and everchanging blog news source. Naturally the facts on the ground change as you are writing them, and mistakes happen. You are passionate and PRESENT with the story, not some cog in a big machine, so there is excitement and a touch of tabloid zeal.

So what? Your fans are smart enough to read through that and appreciate what I appreciate you for--you are FIRST on the story--and you don't LIE (like way too many mainstream sources.)

oh, you're a tease all right. That's what we love about you.

Thanks for listening to all the feedback you generate. We truly appreciate your sensitivity and willingness to hear the truth, no matter what.

117. why all the annoying ads?
many people have commented on the annoying (understatement) ads, but I'm not just commenting, I'm asking why are they there?

Lots of other great sites out there with great content don't abuse their visitors like yours does.

I only wish that our corporate media "news" crowd had the credibility you do.

Give me Raw Story and Helen Thomas and that's enough for me.

125. i actually like the way the "breaking" headlines are teasers -- i makes me
feel like there's real people behind the headline who are frantically wroking to get the story out. it builds interest and goes with your Weegee-esque design.

mass consumption news is not a model to follow.

the thing about communicating to people with design/words/pictures -- is that it can be used to ENGAGE the audience; or it can be used keep them PASSIVE. you are either in their face or at a distance. the fact that so many people mention the editorial "design" decision to use "breaking" teasers doesn't mean you are driving people away. it means they remember you for something. so what if it bugs them. they are supposed to bugged. this is news, not entertaiment. it's jarring and pisses people off...it's NEWS. keep the damn device. it's working for you.

i don't have any problem with the ads or the pop-ups either. i'm glad you are well supported.

i think of rawstory as first-stop news. it's the first place i go to see if anything interesting is happening. three little retractions out of this recent cycle of washington upheaval -- peh! give me a real boo-boo like missing WMDs or whole cloth fabrications -- then i'll have a criticism.

ya'll need to get over it and let these guys get back to work. i need to know what's going on dammit!!

seriously, though -- the fact that this is even an issue is a testament to how relevant and powerful rawstory has become. rock on.

129. Who Was It That Claimed 22 Indictments Were Coming?
I don't want to blame Raw Story, but I'm pretty sure I saw a couple of links here doing the "happy dance" about that large number of indictments and it was linked to a Raw Story headline. The frantic nature of this place just adds to confusion as no sooner is a story up on a site than someone is here posting and commenting...most times before even THEY have read the entire article.

Regarding the pop-ups. I can't access Raw Story here as the pop-ups include some from sites my firewall won't accept...generally from sites that try to plant spyware...my machine won't even access the home page when it encounters one of those sites.

I expected last week to be crazy with tons of rumors and web sites trying to be the first one with "the scoop"...one that was plainly obvious wasn't going to happen until Fitzgerald spoke. Whether someone had it right or wrong or how close they were really makes no difference as I viewed it then as pure gossip and that any one who took it beyond that was setting themselves up for a let down...many did.

While I can't commend Raw Story, I won't condemn either as a healthy mind doesn't accept any information...left or right, friend or foe, without some degree of healthy scepticism.

I'm glad to see someone from the site posting here and interested in our comments and hope there some useful information gathered here.

135. Yes I Was Around During Watergate
And what does that have to do this with scandal? Different times, different players, different country.

I never claimed I knew what was happening with Fitzgerald and the Grand Jury and my comment here were about the many, including Raw Story, who were trying to read tea leaves and built up a lot of hopes here that ended up not being accurate...just gossip of the moment.
