I'm just thinking out loud here. Bear with me...
I'm still pondering what to make of todays indictment of Scooter Libby and the continuing scrutiny of Karl Rove. First of all, I'm impressed with Patrick Fitzgerald. He appears to be beyond reproach -- a professional through and through. Contrast this with Ken Starr's disgraceful Clinton investigation. More significantly, though, I can't help but feel that Libby and Rove acted without direction from their superiors: Cheney and/or Bush. And let's face it: deep down we were all hoping that this is what Fitzgerald would have uncovered and reported. I still haven't lost hope. Let me explain.
It's already public knowledge that Fitzgerald was prepared to indict Rove and Rove was able to temporarily fend of indictment after last-minute meetings with Fitzgerald. I think it's pretty clear that Rove agreed to cooperate with the investigation, either helping to secure the Libby indictment or, gasp, roll over on the higher-ups. With the grand jury expiring today and there being no possibility of extending this grand jury's term, I think it's likely the poker-faced Fitzgerald wanted to cash in his chips before the casino closed for the night -- hence the Libby indictment. But I also think there's far more poker to be played and that we'll see another grand jury empaneled before long -- maybe during Libby's trial, maybe during Libby's inevitable plea-bargaining.
Libby and Rove are ideologues and weasels, Libby more so the former and Rove more so the latter. As it is with these chickenhawks, they are more than happy to pound the drums of war yet highly reluctant to pick up a weapon and fight in the war. Hence the multiple deferments when it came time for most of these losers to serve their country in Vietnam. The long and short of it? Lots of tough talk but no willingness to risk life and limb for the "cause." This leads me to believe that Rove won't be willing to "take one for the team" if it means jail time. If Fitzgerald is true to form and tightens the screws on Rove, and I have no doubt he will, I suspect the little shit-weasel will do whatever it takes to avoid doing time. Ditto Libby. Cowards don't change their yellow stripes.
It's the chickenhawk way, after all.
