Please forgive this rare rant but I can't let this pass...
The shit's been building and building and every once in a while you're going to hit critical mass... and this frigging does it for me.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp. on Thursday posted a quarterly profit of $9.9 billion, its biggest ever and one of the largest in U.S. corporate history, as it raked in a bonanza from soaring oil and gas prices.

Exxon's oil and gas production fell 4.7 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier as outages caused by Katrina and Rita, maintenance activities, and maturing fields more than offset higher production from new fields in West Africa.

Exxon said it did not see the point of a windfall profits tax.

"Frankly, if you're trying to encourage supply growth, it seems odd to put in place disincentives," Henry Hubble, vice president of investor relations for Exxon, said on a conference call with analysts.

Looky here, motherfucker...if your profit's up 75% over the third quarter of last year yet your fucking production was down 4.7% for the same period that is a WINDFALL, you assholes!
You over-stuffed sons o' bitches didn't do FUCK-ALL for that extra money except change the fucking numbers on the signs at the pumps...it wasn't earned.

You want to know what a food-for-oil scandal is? It's families skipping meals so they can afford to stay warm and drive themselves to their shit-paying work every day.

I'm going to LAUGH MY ASS OFF when you fucking pigs have to burn your money-piles to stay warm once the oil's gone because you lack the fucking skills necessary to cut a cord of wood and no one will fucking 'do' for you anymore because your money is no longer worth the paper it's printed on.

TAKE your congress, TAKE your president (and veep if you can fucking find him), and GET THE FUCK OUTTA MY JOINT!

Oh, and dig this shit...

While Exxon's quarterly profit was up 75 percent from a year earlier, and revenue rose 32 percent to more than $100 billion, the results fell short of Wall Street forecasts due to production outages caused by the hurricanes and sharply lower profit at the company's chemicals division.

"They were a bit disappointing, but this a temporary phenomenon," said Paul Kuklinski, an analyst with Boston Energy Research/Soleil Securities.

Just goes to fucking show there ain't no sating some goddamned pigs.

3. Consider this:
Saudi Arabia is the biggest funder of the "insurgency" in Iraq. They're the ones who jerked up the price of crude oil, thereby allowing us - their most dependable customers - to pay for the privilege of having our own soldiers killed by people defending their own country.

How's that for beautiful?

And the Bush family is ever so tight with the Saudis.............

22. Don't you know the purpose of capitalism is to concentrate wealth?
This is just free f@#$ing enterprise at its best.

The spin of course is that poor people can't do any sort of development of production within the community, you need a big ass pool of money to do good things. The rich have that big ass pile of money.

The unstated flip side is that no where does it say that money must always spent on the development of production within the community from which the wealth was concentrated.

Or do we need 200 years of corruption, graft, trusts, plutocrcies, fake shortages, phony "technology infancy" talk about alternative energy, and general corporate malfeasence, instead of the 100 years of which we just witnessed?

45. No - it is most certainly the time
but instead of nationalization - lets talk re-regulation. I think the time will be right after America pays it's winter heating bills under a de-regulated natural gas industry.

Regulate the Gasoline industry

Re-regulate the electric industry

Re-regulate the natural gas industry

Regualte the insurance industry

Regulate Health care - that would go at least 50% of the way to providing affordable health care to all Americans.

Huge electric and gas monopolies flourished under regulation for 70 years. There is no shame in consumer protection.

58. ONlY 75% increase in profits?
My 97-year-old mother gets a tiny check from an oil inheritance. For years she'd get maybe $100 every three months. Now she's getting something like $300 a month. I don't understand the intricacies of even simple arithmetic, but jumping from $30 to $300 a month is in the stratosphere. One thousand percent? Surely not.

I'd figured that the "inheritance" would come to me divided three times, eventually go to my children divided four more times, and finally go to their chidlren divided another two times. I'd guessed that our grandchildren might get all of fifty cents a month from it. However, prices keep jumping at this rate, our grandchildren might be oil heirs and heiresses after all.

60. not a solution but...
I would urge everyone here to buy gas from Citgo... did you know that Venezuelans are paying roughly 33 cents per gallon and that their state funded oil company (Citgo) pays for their National Health Care and education initiatives? Also Venezuela has begun a home heating assistance program in America for poor people (with nearly the same amount of assistance as the US federally funded program)... primarily because Chavez believes it is the right thing to do (no incentives from US gov whatsoever, in fact i'm sure they're ticked off about it but because Citgo is technically treated like any other corporation, they can spend their profits however they see fit)...

CHAVEZ ROCKS!!!

62. Supply and Demand -- basic economics
Not just capitalist economics, either.

Finite resource economics. Decrease the supply, increase the demand and profit will increase.

I love it when folks who are nominally environmentalist scream and shout when the price of gas goes up to what it has been in Europe all along. It is simply seeking equilibrium doing that. Gas in US has been kept artificially low and the result is all the enviro problems we have in this country.

Tax the profits if you wish, but your only other options are to collectivize the gas industry (like in Alaska -- sort of) or subsidize (promote burning of more) gasoline in the face of Asian demand.

As someone said on another thread, the only reason the "sheeple" hate Bush is gas prices. People truly don't understand economics and America is complacent and under-informed about these issues.

When production FALLS on a resource that has inelastic demand, profits RISE. It is basic economics.

69. Of course. And it's also basic economics which has stalled for decades
meaningful research and development of alternate energy.

So it's pretty damned obvious basic anything, least of all economics, is a sensible solution.

If business continues to ignore social responsibility and show allegiance only to the bottom line to the detriment of society, business is going to find itself regulated to a fare-thee-well or nationalized because there is only so much a society will bear...business pushes that envelope at its own peril.

When it becomes a matter of survival I guarantee you Daddy Warbucks will find his own head stuck on the bedpost, not the cabana boy's.

63. Conoco's earnings were released yesterday and profits were up 89%.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 08:17 PM by ignatius 2
This is disgusting, literally making money from disaster and terror..just like their sister defense industries.

Who says death, destruction and grief doesn't pay?

10% minimum of those profits should go into a hurricane relief fund for the rebuilding of hurricane ravaged infra-structure and taken off the backs of the American people. The same American people who were forced to contribute to those obscene profits to begin with. Talk about your double taxation..

66. We can thank the Rockefellers for this
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 08:25 PM by Emit
Ironically, I was just reading a little history on the Rockefellers and, back in 1906, the US Government charged Standard Oil--the direct ancestor of Exxon-- with violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, after Standard was exposed as a monopoly, controlling 95% of all oil produced in the US. In 1911, the US Supreme Court agreed: "Seven men and a corporate machine have conspired against their fellow citizens. For the safety of the Republic we now decree that this dangerous conspiracy must be ended by November 15th."

Of course, the Rockefellers, then forced to dissolve, ironically maneuvered themselves into a position that only increased their wealth. Rockefeller became America's first billionaire shortly after this.

We continue to see the effects of this. It is truly amazing to see the expansive wealth and political involvement this family has in our country and government:

...In case you were not able to keep a running total of the firms enmeshed in the various strands of the Rockefeller web, let us summarize the known results: 37 of the nation's top l00 industrials, 9 of the top 20 transportation firms, the nation's number one utility, 3 of the 4 largest insurance companies, plus scores of smaller companies engaged in manufacturing, distribution, retail sales, loans, or investments, are controlled by the Rockefellers.

76. Last year, ExxonMobil set an all-time record for profits
In 2004, ExxonMobil's net profit for the year was $25.3 Billion. That shattered the old all-time record of somewhere around $17 billion.

This year, ExxonMobil is on track to net well over $30 billion, possibly even over $35 billion.

81. Sorry prole - but you're wrong
You over-stuffed sons o' bitches didn't do FUCK-ALL for that extra money except change the fucking numbers on the signs at the pumps...it wasn't earned.

They worked DAMNED hard for those profits -- can you imagine what it cost them to get their boys Bush and Cheney to look as if they were elected, and what it cost to line the pockets of the likes of Delay and Hastert, so that all their happy little energy bills would get passed whether they were supported by a majority or not.

"didn't do FUCK-ALL" - I think not. Lobbyists are not free, you know. Jeez, Prole.

85. do you remember how during the 2004 elections
The Bush-bots kept whining about John Kerry's $.50 gas tax per gallon? Keep in mind that was a proposal from years prior and he certainly wasn't proposing that once elected. Well guess what you stupid fucks, we got it way way worse with Bush. Hey, is that war in Iraq saving you any money at the pumps? Fuck you.

It just makes me sick we have to pay for the mistake of others (the people who voted for Bush).

88. You bet. I also remember this...
Q: The Energy Secretary said he would not tap US strategic petroleum reserves in order to drive down prices saying those reserves are for emergencies. But given the shortages that exist, do you consider this an appropriate time to tap those reserves?

A: No, I don’t. I agree with the energy secretary that the strategic petroleum reserve is meant for a national wartime emergency. What I think the president ought to do is get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots. One reason why the price is so high is because the price of crude oil has been driven up. OPEC has gotten its supply act together and it’s driving the price, like it did in the past. And the president must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price. And if in fact there is collusion amongst big oil, he ought to intercede there as well.

86. amen to that, sister
I saw that Conoco-Phillips was over the top, too with profits.
They are lickin their chops waiting for the cold weather to hit
the NE, so they can rake in even more this winter. someone told me
that people in Mich.(i think) got letters saying their heating bills will be
much higher this winter,(up To 70%) and to prepare..... how are they supposed to do that? anyone out there get a letter?
as far as the boycott issue goes, I buy from Chevron because
it is a company owned by the gov't of Venezuela - ala Hugo Chavez.
That may be mistaken logic on my part, don't know, but at least
I am buying from a company that is trying to take care of it's
people.... maybe i'm wrong, unsure....

89. Nationalize Now
That is an awesome rant! It is time to nationalize oil production in this country now. Big oil has proven over and over that they do not have this nation's intrests at heart. Oh wait, they don't have a frickin' heart! Bust up the oil trusts, and put the people in charge.
