I realized that after I saw some pics of them in their youth working in the Nixon/Reagan/Bush admins. The two of them were reasonably handsome young men, but I would not have recognized them today from those early pics. They wear their venality and god-knows-what-else on their faces today -- they've earned those cold eyes and sneers the hard way, while their hearts shriveled into lumps of coal.

... "H" word in this context (shsssh, "Hitler"), but what Hitler created around him was a cult of personality. The fortunes of the empire rose and fell with der Fuhrer's fortunes. Same with Bush. Everyone of the people you mention has something to gain by hitching their wagons to Bush's star.

Well, the star turned out to be a submarine. Their failure to acknowledge that makes them appear very weird to people who are psychologically distant from that cult of personality. Only after Bush crashes and burns will they realize just how mistaken they were in their hitchings--and, they will run off looking for a new personality.

When questions such as this appear, I invariably suggest a reading of Eric Hoffer's True Believer, simply because he managed to nail the personality of those who chase after people like Bush, and understood the psyche of the people who crave authoritarian leadership, whether that leadership be religious or political or both.

... offputting to quite a few readers because of its rather dry, pedantic and philosophical style. It was written in 1949, not long after WWII, but the insights in it are often illuminating. It's a seminal work in the structure of cults and how they obtain power.
